The Université of Quebec with Rimouski is a Université network of the Université of Quebec which is located at Rimouski. Founded in 1969, it appears among most modern in the Quebec.

The UQAR is made up of two campuses: the campus of Rimouski of course, and that of Lévis close to the town of Quebec.

History

On the current site of the university, the Ursulines made set up in 1906 their first monastery in the east of Quebec. This building burned in 1937 but was rebuilt as of 1938.

The Ursulines are nuns resulting initially from the Company of Saint-Ursule, founded by Angèle Mérici in 1535 in Italy to accommodate the women wanting to serve Christ without having of attraction or means for the monastic life. Then, the community increased, gaining the Europe, then the whole world thereafter.

Until 1969, they accommodated more than 20000 young girls and several boarders, ensuring a formation of teacher training school and traditional course to them. Of 1933 with 1960, it also dealt with the boarding school named St-Georges for young boys.

With the autumn 1969, the University of Quebec with Rimouski took over in the vocation of teaching of this house. Other houses were added to the principal building: sports complex, laboratory oceanologic, library and services with the students, etc

In 2006, the UQAR already decreed more than 32.000 diplomas for followed programs not only Rimouski, but in several cities of the Gaspésie, the Northern coast and the Low-Saint-Laurent.

The UQAR today

Today, the UQAR is a large university, true center of attraction of the east of the Quebec. Most of the students of the Low-Saint-Laurent and Gaspésie are found with Rimouski for their academic works. So much so that for the school period, the city counts a student for four inhabitants. The University attracts also students of several areas of Quebec, in particular by programs typified well in biology, geography or marine science.

The university belongs to the network of the universities of Quebec which gathers various educational establishments and research institutes, which largely supports the exchanges as well in research as in teaching. Moreover, the UQAR offers programmes of studies on the campus of Lévis close to the town of Quebec and includes/understands the Institut of the marine science of Rimouski (ISMER). Also, with its two regional offices (with River-of-Wolf and Gaspé) and its courses offered to several places on the territory, the UQAR are the most decentralized university Quebec.

There are approximately 5500 students (full-time and part time) who attend the university by counting the students who do not even study with Rimouski. Among these 5500, one counts more than 250 foreign students, for the French majority.

The framework of work is also interesting: with, to two steps, the residence halls (300 places) which counts among most pleasant of Quebec, the Fleuve the St. Lawrence bordering the city and the forest in the vicinity offer a framework of pleasant life for all. To that is added the multitude of activities suggested to the UQAR: theater company, art galleries, workshop of sculpture, club of photograph, newspaper of the school, large library… The sports are not absent from list: badminton, basketball, hockey, football, volley ball, there is for all the tastes.
