The university of Padoue is one of the oldest universities of the world. It was founded the September 29th 1222 (See the site of the University) by professors and students having flees the Université of Bologna, because of breach of liberty academics and with the privileges which had however been guaranteed to the teachers and to their pupils. The university of Padoue was creates in answer to a need, induced by social conditions and cultural specific, contrary to the majority of the universities which owe their foundation with a charter with the Pope.

Lesson

At the origin, the lesson was limited to the Droit and the Théologie, but they were soon extended to medicine, with philosophy, astronomy and rhetoric. As from 1399, there were two universities:
  • the Universitas Iuristarum for the study of the civil law, the canonical right and the theology
  • the Universitas Artistarum for the study of medicine, philosophy, rhetoric and astronomy.

They will be fully joined together only in 1813.

Organization

The studies and the life inside the university were organized in nations, which were the reflection of geographic origins or ethnic. The various nations formed themselves two groups: Citramontains (i.e. Italian) and the Ultramontanes (i.e. others).

As with Bologna, it was at the beginning the students themselves which voted for the statutes of the university, elected the vice-chancellor within the student body and chose the professors and the courses.

The teachers were remunerated thanks to collections of funds.

Later, with 14th and 15th century, the recruitment and the remuneration of the teachers became spring of the public authorities.

Prestige and radiation

As from the 15th century one long period of more than three centuries of a prestige started growing because the university of Padoue profited from the protection of the République of Venice. However the latter were given so that Padoue remains the only multidisciplinary university inside its territory.

For this period, Padoue contributed a great share to the incipient scientific revolution. It is the time of the development of the philosophical thought, of the studies of the Médecine and the Anatomie and the great discoveries in Astronomie, Physique and Mathématiques, in particular at the moment when Galileo is teaching at the university (of 1592 with 1610).

As of the first times, the reputation of Padoue attracted students of the whole continent. Andre Vésale, Albertino Mussato, the Cup attended the establishment. This is particularly notable with 16th and 17th centuries. At that time indeed, the students were not only attracted by the prestige of the teachers but also by the spirit of tolerance which was guaranteed by the République of Venice. In 15th and 16th centuries, the important ones appear study in Padoue, and among them in particular Pic of Mirandole, Galileo or Nicolas Copernic.

The year 1678 knows moreover one of the greatest prides of the university of Padoue. It is this year indeed that Elena Lucrezia Piscopia obtained its diploma of philosophy, becoming thus the first graduate society woman of a university.
