Created in the form of a general studium the university can teach all the disciplines: theology, canon law, civil law, medicine and arts. The Faculty of Law is transferred to Rennes, in October 1735, on decision of the king. The Revolution signs the end of the universities of Ancien Mode. The university of Nantes is closed in August 1793. Certain schools replace it however, the Médecine, in particular, will continue to be taught in Nantes and later the right and the letters.A decree of December 29th, 1961 institutes a university in Nantes. In 1962, three new faculties (sciences, letters, right) are installed on the campus of the edges of the Erdre on the fields of the Hillock and Lombarderie recently acquired by the town of Nantes. In May 1961, Michel Debré, Prime Minister comes to pose the first stone of the Faculty of Science in the presence of the mayor of the city Henri Orrion. The law Faure which makes following the events of May 1968 organizes faculties in " Units of Teaching and Recherche" within the new university public corporations from now on autonomous. In 1970, the statutes of the university of Nantes are adopted: they mention 6 literary UER, 5 scientific UER, the UER of right, economic scenes, business management, medicine, pharmacy and odontology.
