The university of Lyon is a Pôle of research and higher education (NEAR) having statute of scientific public corporation of co-operation (EPCS), created by the decree n°2007-386 of March 21st, 2007. This CLOSE gathers more than 100.200 students.

It should not be confused with the grouping which preceded it: the university Pole of Lyon (SWEATER). This last has to him a statute of Groupement of public interest (GIP), which gathers a greater number of establishments, but for a co-operation very largely more reduced.
