The Université of Lubumbashi (UNILU) is a public university of the Democratic republic of Congo, based in the town of Lubumbashi. Created in 1955, the university will be called successively: official University of Congo and Rwanda-Urundi , University of State d' Élisabethville , official University of Congo , National university of Congo/Campus of Lubumbashi , National university of Zaire/Campus of Lubumbashi and finally University of Lubumbashi . It counts close to 21  000 students in 10 faculties, 2 universities and 1 institute of higher learning. Its vice-chancellor is Kaumba Lufunda.

History

The university is created in 1955 like official Université of Congo and Rwanda-Urundi by the Université of Liege (Belgium), and is open in 1956.

In 1960, this one is replaced by the Université of State d' Élisabethville , to become the official Université of Congo in 1963.

In 1971, following the regrouping of the universities and institutes of higher learning in National university of Congo, the site becomes the National university of Congo/Campus of Lubumbashi and in 1972, National university of Zaire/Campus of Lubumbashi (UNAZA/Lubumbashi).

In 1981, following the ordinance-law n˚ 25/81 bearing on the creation of autonomous public corporations of enseignment, created the University of Lubumbashi.

  • the students of the UNILU are called Kasapards , a name full with sarcastic remark and humor, drawn from the name of the large prison of Kasapa, which is at the level of the town of Lubumbashi, not far from the university residences.
