History

The foundation of the University of Liege in 1817, on the initiative of the king Guillaume I {{er}} of the Netherlands, is the result of a intellectual long tradition which goes back to the origins of the Principality. As from the 11th century, under the impulse of the prince-bishops, the schools inhabitants of Li2ege constitute, indeed, a center of attraction for the students and the researchers who come to conquer their first ranks there or, like Pétrarque, to exploit the richnesses of the libraries.

If the reputation of the medieval schools were worth in Liege the name of news Athens, that to say that of the College which opened in 1496, at the site even of the current central building of the University, 20-August places? The brothers of the Common life were the promoters of a renovated teaching there: that of humanities and the professors of thousands from students inhabitant of Li2ege and even abroad, like the future pedagog Jean Sturm, who made blow the spirit of the College inhabitant of Li2ege to Strasbourg and, from there, in a great number of reformed gymnasia.

At the end of the 16th century, the Jesuits will replace the brothers in their own house. This one will shelter then, after the removal of the Society of Jesus, the Large College in Island, entrusted to the secular clergy by the prince-bishop Velbruck (enlightened prelate who reorganized in English Academy the College of the English Jesuits, installed in Liege since 1614, and caused a whole high level technical education by the creation of several schools).

The decree of Napoleon Ier of March 17th, 1808, bearing on the organization of an imperial University and indicating Liege like sits of a Académie in particular comprising a Faculty of Arts and a Faculty of Science, is the first university charter inhabitant of Li2ege. Neither the medieval schools, however if re-elected, neither the College of the edges of Meuse, although it exempted two higher courses, neither the Schools open under Velbruck, nor even the English Academy, in spite of its name, can be regarded as universities. Liege owes its university to the only sovereign of the Netherlands on which it never depended: Guillaume Ier could remember the prestigious past of teaching and culture of the burning City, when it decided to establish a university of State out of Walloon ground. Nearly 200 years afterwards, even if it settled to some extent with the Sart-Tilman, the University of Liege, which depends now on the French Communauté of Belgium, is always in the same place, at the edge of the Meuse, in the center of what one called a long time the Island, Latin Quarter of Liege since the modern time.

The University of Liege does not have a long past, but it has already a history and especially of deep roots. Is it better pledge for the future, towards which it is resolutely turned? The vocation pluralist of our Alma MATER, its opening on political, social and industrial realities of today and tomorrow, its active participation with international and European programs of basic research or applied, its presence in all the Community actions as regards student mobility are as many assets so that Liege lives, Université of Europe.

The University of Liege honoured several important personalities like Yasser Arafat, Jean-Claude Trichet, Umberto Eco, Tzvetan Todorov, Salman Rushdie or Ingrid Betancourt, in their granting the title of Docteur Honoris Causa .

The current vice-chancellor of the University is Professor Bernard Rentier.
