History

The university today

Academic profile

The University of Kinshasa at present remains the largest university of the DRC and a great source where other institutions draw the professors. It has a teaching staff including/understanding 500 Professor S doctors with thesis, a scientific body including/understanding 1000 Chiefs of work and Assistants.

The university dipose of more than 23.000 students, whose majority is in first cycle. A majority which holds with the facility of incrire at the University. The faculty of Médecine accommodates several thousands of students, and it is frequent that courses are exempted in amphitheater or room of promotion gathering more than one thousand of students. For lack of information available, one is unaware of the number of the registered voters (in spite of the posted restrictive number) and the manpower of the foreign students.

In the field of the Research, poverty is felt. The UNIKIN does not have the international standard, although scientific publications of quality are there. In spite of poverty, the University of Kinshasa has the cells of research which gather researchers, cells which in their turn gathered for the majority of the cases in of Intituts of research (example of Insititut de Recherche in Economic scenes and Social " IRES"). For the students, the search for excellence, in a general way, is not any more the concern first of a great number who are satisfied to satisfy the average of passage (sanction going from 50% to 69%). A real problem which saw the day with the generalized crisis that knows the country. The outstanding commendation awards récompansant the efforts and the perfomances better students and who create the emulation are not current any more.

Classifications and reputation

The University of Kinshasa, formerly largest of all Africa tarnished its blazon with the passing of years at the rate/rhythm of the decline of its country. Today, in all the international classifications its name does not appear. But according to fortuitous observations, it remains the most prestigious first and of the Universities of the Democratic republic of Congo.

Libraries

The University of Kinshasa has a central Bibliothèque, which largely needs the recent works. This reality with the which researchers must face does not make it possible them to be effective and competitive. Let us note that the central library is opened with everyone, rich in richest Encyclopédie and, in term of books, of all the Republic.

In addition to the central library which extends on two stages, the University within each faculty has a specialized library, i.e. treating only the matter of Faculty.

Life coed

The University of Kinshasa has very rich community life: with a great number of organizations, which they are economic, humane or Community associations, or of corporations or “clubs”. Of all these organizations, they is the cultural circles animated by students themselves which dissociate and animate the University. Circles which can prove to be important for their formations, because those stimulate the spirit of research in the chief of the students, promote the scientific culture and analyze the various aspects of the problems affecting the world and the DRC in particular.

But this environment is seen destroyed, each beginning of academic year, by practices called " bleusailles" who transform themselves into a species of hazing - practices prohibited by the University - and by an asthenia concerning some students. For a certain time, this practice tends to disappear.

For the representation coed, each faculty has of a representation coed and, for the majority, organizations coeds in responsibility of animate the life coed; elected by the students (rate of participation with the elections is not regularly high). Its role is to ensure the intermediary between the hierarchy of the University and the students.

Housing

The university does not guarantee to its more: 23000 students housing, since having only some apartments like home for students. The latter always do not have the incomes necessary to rent a residence at the University which cost expensive compared to the average Congolese income. And the price of the residence includes only the residence, the invoices having milked with water and electricity. A great number of students prefer collocation except campus or to remain on their premises, the more so as the conditions of Home are not reliable for the life of the every day.

Very soon the government will launch out in a campaign of rehabilitation and construction of the residence halls and the creation of a body which will be in charge of the management of these residence halls and the grants.

The Democratic republic of Congo occupies an important place in Africa with regard to higher education, is thus, this is why, it develops and modernizes its academic infrastructures to receive many foreign students.
