University of Grenade

History

The university of Grenade appeared in 1349 when Yusuf I {{er}} created Madraza (Arab “school” in ). This Sultan also built the palate of Comarès and the door of the Esplanade of the Alhambra. Madraza functioned until in 1499 - 1500, when the Cardinal Cisneros took it by storm and destroyed it, being thus opposed to the wills Isabelle de Castille and Ferdinand d' Aragon. At the time of this event the library of Madraza took fire on the Place Bib-Rambla, which one of the most important fires was ever undergone in Europe, being given the broadth of the production and the trade of the book in the culture Andalusí . Once the disappeared university, Ferdinand d' Aragon made building the Mairie of the city. It was only in 1526 that, by the will of Charles Quint, Grenade obtained a university again.

Grenade was successively, since its beginnings, Ibère, Roman, and later Juive and Islamique. Capital of old the Kingdom nazari, Grenade was the last city of the Iberian peninsula conquered with the Musulmans by the Kings Catholiques in 1492, fact which leads to the formation of the Spain. The domination Castilian was initially respected, but starting from 1499 was the object of criticism which culminated with the policy of the Cardinal Cisneros, refusing the orders of the Kings Catholiques and provocant a rising of the inhabitants of Grenade. Cisneros benefitted from the situation to burn the libraries, in order to éradiquer the influence Islamique and to force the city to reconvert itself. This tension and cultural Spoliation decreased only when Charles Quint reinstruisit the academic works in Grenade. The university of Grenade was founded in 1531, thanks to the initiative of the Empereur Charles Quint and according to a bubble of the pope Clément VII. Thus, Grenade affirmed its vocation of university town opened with different the Peuples and their various Culture S and Croyances.

The university of Grenade was a singular witness of the Histoire, whereas grew its influence on the environment Social and Culturel of the city until setting up in right in center Intellectuel and Culturel of the south of the Spain during almost five centuries. Today, it became a Institution strong and engaged with what surrounds, as one can see it through the Loi of the University Reform (LRU): this one defines the Universités like centers in the service of the Société, i.e. the Enseignement, the Recherche and the Prestation of services. The university of Grenade knew during these last years, like consequence of L.R.U and university autonomy, the greatest growth of its history which locates it between the first Spanish universities. About 80.000 people have a direct relationship with the university of Grenade, if one counts pupils, professors and administrative staff and services.

The cities (Grenade, Ceuta and Melilla)

The university establishments and dependences are distributed in various places of Grenade, which gets for the city its own university style: 270  000 inhabitants of the capital, 60  000 are university students. Grenade joins together moreover other singular characteristics: it is historically the reduced last of the Islam in Western Europe (the Alhambra and the Généralife being two samples which let imagine the splendor of this Civilization) but also the city of the Renaissance (the Royal Hospital or the cathedral is also examples of good conservation of the historical heritage of Grenade).

To speak about Grenade is also to speak about a privileged geographical location, halfway between the sea and the mountains: at 60 minutes in the car of the Grenadian beaches, at 75 minutes of Malaga, and at 30 minutes of the ski station of Sierra Nevada (3.400 meters of altitude). The university of Grenade has also two University campus S in the Spanish cities of Ceuta (more 70  000 inhabitants) and Melilla (more than 60.000 inhabitants) located at the north of the Africa. These cities have a singular character due to their cultural identity and the different coexistence Cultures within their Population.

By tradition, the university of Grenade meets the requirements to ensure the studies of Doctorat in almost the totality of the Curricula corresponding to the studies of Maîtrise and higher Ingénierie than it offers. During the academic year 2004 - 2005, it ensured 141 programs of Doctorat, in the following fields: Art and social sciences, Sciences of health, Applied sciences, legal Social sciences and , technical educations, programs of vooperation with the South America.

This center aims at the permanent Formation of the Professionnels according to a great diversification of scientific disciplines and specialization for all those which have just finished their studies Maîtrise, without forgetting either the courses which can recess the preparation of the pupils.

  • Summer school

During summer, university of Grenade organizes also course of short duration directed as well with student academics as with people continuing of studies of third cycle and which belongs to the Work world, which thus enables them to bring up to date their knowledge, or to specialize in various scientific disciplines. They are intensive courses which proceed:
    • on the coast of Grenade (Almuñécar) and in other cities of the interior like Guadix, Lanjarón or Santa Fe, and which is organized by the Mediterranean Center of the university;
    • with Ceuta and Melilla.

  • Center of modern languages

The Center of modern languages organizes courses of foreign languages and courses of Spanish for foreigners.

The Research

The university of Grenade invests to reach a future which resting on a Recherche of quality. It supports in particular in a decisive way the ways of Recherche which, although less developed, can be interesting in a Société in change and be used as union with the Entreprises and the Institutions of our Environnement. These ideas obtained results which multiplied the funds intended for the Recherche, and opened real prospects which had never existed before. Growth of the scientific production done of the university of Grenade one of the three first Spanish universities. The increasing relations with the private State enterprises and of the country are increasingly more numerous thanks to contracts of Recherche and Performance of service which guarantees the future of its activity of Recherche.

  • Office of transfer of the results of a search (OTRI)

The Bureau of Transfer of the Results of a search of the university of Grenade is the organism in charge to promote and manage the relations of the university with the world of the Entreprise. The Bureau is a Service public specialized in the drain of the requests of the Entreprise towards the university and the transfer of innovating knowledge towards the productive sector of the economy. Among the services which it offers, one can quote the following: the Office of the projects and European financing, the Center of Connection of the South of Europe-Andalusia (CESEAND), Industrial property (Patent)…

The university of Grenade develops work of Recherche through eleven Institut S of various scientific disciplines: Andalusian Institute of Sciences of the Earth (CSIC), Andalusian Institute of Geophysics and Prevention of the Seismic Disasters, Inter-University Andalusian Institute of Criminology, Institute of Biotechnology, Institute " Carlos I" of Theoretical physics and Computational, Institute of Water, Institute of regional development, Institute of Neurosciences " Federico Olóriz", Institute of Nutrition and Technology of the Food, Institute of the Studies of the Woman, Academic institute of Peace and the Conflicts.

The Scientific Center of Instrumentation offers various services of support to the Recherche, directed especially towards the experimental disciplines , Techniques and of the Santé: Services of animals of experimentation, radiometric Dating and Geological isotopic, Determination of structures, Microscopy, Image processing, fundamental Biology, etc

International relations

The university of Grenade takes an active part in the university programs of the European Union, as well with regard to the mobility of the Professorat and the student as that of the Enquiring : they are programs coordinated by the Bureau of the International relations and directed to the countries which belong to the EU and other geographical areas like the North America, the Latin America, the Europe of the East, the North Africa etc Thanks to bilateral agreements or to specific Conventions between Universités partners, there exists a traditional collaboration with certain universities of the geographical areas described above, like with the Japan, the China, Israel, the Australia, the Bénin, the Asian states of the ex- The USSR, the Palestine, etc Of associations of universities such as the Group of Coïmbre, AUIP, ISTEC, ATEI, etc are also some examples of collaboration. Nevertheless, there are three more intense, obvious zones of co-operation for a country like the Spain and a university with traditions like that of Grenade: The European Union, the Latin America and the the Maghreb. Fruit of this co-operation, the university of Grenade annually receives more 8  000 professors, student and administrators of Université S of the whole world which attend the language classes and of culture Spanish (approximately 5% of the inscriptions), ensure the Enseignement and collaborate with groups of Recherche.

The UGR and Erasmus

The university of Grenade is today the European university which receives the most student Erasmus, with a total of 1.620 pupils.

The UGR and IEP of Bordeaux

The Faculty of political science and sociology of the university of Grenade has in particular an agreement of exchange with the Institut of political studies of Bordeaux (France): the student of the two Universités pass half of their Cursus (that is to say 2 years) in the Université partner and, in the long term, are seen allotting the Diploma of Sciences Po-Bordeaux and the Diploma of the Faculté of political science and sociology of the university of Grenade.
