The University of Geneva , so known under the initials of UNIGE , is the Université of the town of Geneva (Suisse). Founded in 1559 by Jean Calvin, under the name D Academy of Geneva , like a theological and humanistic seminar, it obtains an important radiation. One then teaches there the Rhétorique, the Dialectique, the Hebrew and the Greek . It will extend thereafter its disciplines to the Age of Enlightenment and will take the name of university in 1873 with the creation of the medical college.
The UNIGE proposes each year more than 240 types of diplomas and approximately 150 programs of Continuing education in extremely varied fields. Before 2005, the ranks were the License, DEA and the Doctorat. Since the re-entry 2005, the University joined the European space of higher education by the passage of all faculties to the Processus of Bologna. Geneva also positions, via its membership of Their ( League off European Research Universities ), like one of the 12 best universities of research in Europe.
In 2005 - 2006, 13.182 students attends the university (14 418 students if HEI is included, IUED and the oecumenical Institut of Bossey). 37% of them are foreign (131 countries represented with the France, the Italy and the Spain at the head). 3263 professors and collaborators of teaching ensure the good walk of the institution. That makes the second of it larger university of Switzerland after that of Zurich. It has an affirmed international vocation thus and has also the highest rate of coeds of the country (59% against 45,6% on average national). The access to the examinations requires the payment of a tax of 500 Swiss francs per six-month period.
It is also advisable to add to it an Institute of architecture, a School of translation and interpretation like two schools facultaires (the school of language and civilization Frenchwomen integrated into the Faculty of Arts and the school of physical education and sport integrated into the medical college) and six centers and institutes interfacultaires (data-processing university center, university center of human ecology and sciences of the environment, university center of study of the problems of energy, centers interfacultaire gerontology, the institute of history of the reformation and the European Institut of the university of Geneva).
There exist also three institutes which are closely dependant with the University:
The business bursts in May 2006 and pushes the vice-chancellor André Hurst (since the July 15th 2003 places from there) to present his resignation. The Council of State Genevese refuses its resignation but accepts that of vice-rectrice Louisette Zaninetti. Following the implication of vice-rectrice Nadia Magnenat-Thalmann in this scandal, the Hurst vice-chancellor, the viceone and the vice-rector Peter Suter present their resignation the July 11th 2006 (with effect with the August 31st). This collective resignation is endorsed the July 26th by the Council of State which names a temporary direction then (mandate running of September 1st 2006 with the July 14th 2007). The professor Jacques Weber, former senior of the Faculty of Science, becomes vice-chancellor. Anik de Ribaupierre, former senior of the faculty of psychology and sciences of education, and Jean Kellerhals, professor with the faculty of the economic scenes and social, is indicated vice-rectors/ices. The third vice-rector Charles Bader, professor at the medical college, are named the August 30th. The December 20th, professor Jean-Dominique Vassalli is indicated with the function of vice-chancellor for a 4 years mandate (2007 - 2011).
In 2007, Nadia Magnenat-Thalmann is completely bleached. The audit will not have revealed almost any fraud: the journalists had seized themselves of information not very valid. This time smoke was much more important than fire.
The Council of State also forms an external commission charged to write a preliminary draft of law which will reform in-depth the governorship of the institution. The former federal adviser Ruth Dreifuss assumes the chairmanship of it. The vice-chancellor of the University of Lausanne, Jean-Marc Rapp, will form also part of this commission of 15 members.
With the national plan, the UNIGE has obtained the best results for several years between all the high Swiss university schools near the Funds national of the scientific research. Not less than 60 million Swiss francs are allocated thus annually to the Genevese researchers. With the international level, the UNIGE doubled the number of its publications in the scientific magazines during the 20 last years. As regards molecular biology, the impact of the research led to Geneva locates it at the second world rank, directly behind Princeton. Genevese physics occupies the sixth world rank for its part.
The Genevese university community profits moreover from an access to rich person libraries and extraordinary documents of files as the files of Jean Piaget. Moreover, it benefits from a spirit of innovation of which testify to the researchers of point like Michel Mayor, with the discovery of the Exoplanète S, Denis Duboule with the Génétique or Nicolas Gisin with the quantum Téléportation.
Jointly with the other French universities, Geneva proposes several diplomas post-ranks in economic scenes and social, in Pharmacie, biomedecine, Psychologie, letters, studies kind, human ecology and science of the Environnement, Sociologie and Biologie.
The scientists of the university collaborate narrowly with those of CERN, of ESO, ESA and NASA. Within the framework of the 6th PCRD, which extends from 2002 with 2006,42 projects were in hand in 2004. Among those, 17 relate to the technologies the information, 15 on the life sciences, 4 on the nanosciences and the study of materials, 3 on social sciences and human, 2 on the energy and one on the Astronomie. Lastly, on the international plan, the UNIGE does not count less than 80 collaboration agreements with universities of the 5 continents.
So reinforcing its bonds with Geneva international, the University of Geneva also created the international university Réseau of Geneva (RUIG) in 1999, in collaboration with IUHEI, IUED, the Office of the the United Nations in Geneva and the ICRC.
