The University of Florida (University off Florida, shortened in UF) is a founded public American university in 1853 and one Land-grant establishment, i.e. being given a financing of the US government, located at Gainesville in Florida. At present, UF is one of the American universities most prestigious. According to the academic Classement of the world universities it is number 53 (this classification, in English Academic Ranking off World Universities is established by researchers of the Université Jiao Tong of Shanghai). It is the fourth larger university of the the United States, with 49.693 students in 2006. It is also equipped with the eighth most important budget (almost 1,9 billion dollar per annum). It is, in terms of classification, the sixteenth public university of the United States and the fiftieth university of the United States in general. The University of Florida is famous for its sporting teams, which all are called the " Gators ", and which is classified regularly among the first of the country. It is also with UF that the drink énergisante Gatorade was invented, supposed to refresh the football players American during the pauses.

According to the three more important systems of evaluation of the universities, the University of Florida is classified:

  • 47e on 248 in the classification of the American national universities, realized by U.S. News and World Carryforward .
  • 53e on 500 in the classification of the best world universities, according to the University Jiao Tong of Shanghai.

History

The University such as it exists today was created by the law Buckman (Buckman Act) on June 5th, 1905. The law cut the appropriations of four already existing institutions to gather them under control of the state and to make of it the University of the State of Florida (University off the State off Florida). The next July 6th, the town of Gainesville was selected like site of the future campus, and the courses began on September 26th of the same year.

In 1935, it was decided that the creation date of the University was 1853, date of foundation of oldest of the four institutions from which it resulted (East Florida Seminary).

The University of Florida was established like the only public school of Florida, was reserved to the people of male sex and was prohibited to the colored persons. The school was opened to the young women in 1947, and to the Afro-Americans in 1958. The same year, the medical school and the Shands hospital were created. In 1985, the University integrated the Association of the Universities American (Association off American Universities, AAU), a prestigious organization of secondary education which includes/understands the 62 best schools of the United States, private and public confused.

Studies

The University is divided into twenty-two " colleges" , proposes hundred fields of studies on the level " Undergraduate " (equivalent at the first four years following the end of the college) and more than two hundred diplomas " graduate" (equivalent of the course following M1 in the French system). Each course " undergraduate" four " includes/understands; credit-hours" ; during one year, a student follows approximately thirty credit-hours. In 2005, the school fees were approximately 120 dollars by credit-hour for the residents of Florida, and 520 dollars for the other students.
