university of Budapest (in Hungarian, Eötvös Loránd Tudományegyetem , shortened in ELTE) is one of the principal universities of Hungary, with Budapest. It owes its name to the Hungarian physicist Lorand Eötvös. It is the largest university and oldest of Hungary and was founded in 1635.
Until 1950, the University Eötvös Loránd was called " University Pázmány Péter" (not to be confused with the catholic Pázmány Peter, another university, more recent University).
In 1950, the university was rebâptisée university Eötvös Loránd according to the physicist of the same name.
Today, the university counts eight faculties and more than 30.000 students. According to the world classification of the universities of the world of the University of Shanghai Jiao Tong (2005), ELTE would be the second best university of Hungary (301-400e in the total classification) after the Université of Szeged (203-300e).
