university of Budapest (in Hungarian, Eötvös Loránd Tudományegyetem , shortened in ELTE) is one of the principal universities of Hungary, with Budapest. It owes its name to the Hungarian physicist Lorand Eötvös. It is the largest university and oldest of Hungary and was founded in 1635.

History

ELTE was founded in 1635 with Nagyszombat (today Trnava, Slovakia) by the archévèque one and theologist Peter Pázmány. Its direction was entrusted to the Jésuites. At that time, the university comprised only two faculties: the faculty of arts and a faculty of theology. The Faculty of Law was created in 1667 and the medical college opened in 1769. After dissolution about the Jesuits, the university was moved with Buda (Western bank of Budapest) in 1777 in agreement with the intention of the founders of the university of Budapest. It is only in 1784 that the university found its site final with Pest (Eastern bank of Budapest). The Latin was there the language of teaching until in 1844 where the Hungarian became official language. The women were authorized to be registered starting from 1895.

Until 1950, the University Eötvös Loránd was called " University Pázmány Péter" (not to be confused with the catholic Pázmány Peter, another university, more recent University).

In 1950, the university was rebâptisée university Eötvös Loránd according to the physicist of the same name.

Today

Today, the university counts eight faculties and more than 30.000 students. According to the world classification of the universities of the world of the University of Shanghai Jiao Tong (2005), ELTE would be the second best university of Hungary (301-400e in the total classification) after the Université of Szeged (203-300e).
