University of Beijing

The University of Beijing (Chinese simplified: 北京大学; traditional Chinese: 北京大學; Pinyin: Běijīng Dàxué), known in the language running under the name of Beida (北大, Běidà). Founded with Beijing in 1898, it is one of most prestigious the Université S of China.

University of the elite, Beida was always the hearth of the revolts coeds in China, since her creation. This role was particularly extremely at the time of the Campagne of the Hundred Flowers. The revolt of the Place Tian' anmen, in 1989, started from Beida, where the students were particularly active, and the many Dazibao. After the repression of the Manifestations of the place Tian' anmen, repression with Beida seems to have been important, even if the Chinese mode maintains silence on the whole of the events of June 1989. Since, the university is particularly controlled, in particular by the Communist party, which frames the majority of the students.

In a general way, Beida maintains since its creation the ambiguous relationship with the capacity. Thus, in 1957, the dispute of the mode was encouraged by Mao Zedong within the framework of the Campagne of the Hundred Flowers, before the communist capacity, overflowed by criticisms, decides to repress the movement.

In 2006, the University of Beijing occupied the 14th rank with the classification of the Times Higher Education Supplement .

It is member of the network Universitas 21.
