University of Baghdad
The University of Baghdad (in Arabic: جامعةبغداد) is the largest university with Baghdad, capital of the Iraq. It was established by decree in 1958 and is located close to the river Tigre. Its buildings were drawn by an Italian architect.
Today the university account 24 colleges , 5 institutes of higher learning and 9 research centres. It is established with Baghdad, Mosul and Al Basra.
The last president of the university was, since May 2003, D. Sammi Abed Al-Mahdi Al-Mudaffar.
After the invasion of Iraq of 2003, hundreds of Iraqi academics were killed, kidnapped or threatened, in an attempt to destroy the intellectual elites irakiennes ; one does not agree on the origin of these attacks. Many of these victims were members of the University of Baghdad.
