University of Avignon and the Countries of Vaucluse

The University of Avignon and the Countries of Vaucluse is a French Université , based with Avignon (Vaucluse).

It gathers 4 UFR, 1 IUT and 1 IUP.

Autonomous university, one of smallest of Metropolitan France, competed with by the three Universities of Aix-Marseilles, it accommodates nearly 8.000 students to all the education levels, until the doctorate, and lodges about fifteen recognized research laboratories.

History

To compete with the creation of the Sorbonne, judged too near to the French royal capacity, the Pope Boniface VIII and Charles II, king de Sicile and count de Provence, found the university of Avignon in 1303. The schools which already exist (grammatical medicine, theology, arts…) are federate around four faculties and developed within the university thanks to subsidies of still Roman papacy.

It develops with the presence of the popes in Avignon, competing with the universities of Montpellier and Aix-en-Provence]], until accommodating 17.000 students. Then after the return of the popes in Rome, the University centered on the right loses of its prestige vis-a-vis the Jésuites and to the Séminaire S. With the French revolution, the city is annexed to France and the university removed like all the French universities by the decree of September 15th, 1793.

Avignon becomes again university in 1963, by the opening of a scientific Center of higher education, followed the following year of that of a literary Center of higher education. The two entities depend respectively on and the Faculty of Arts Faculty of Science of Aix-Marseilles.

In 1972, the two Units of teaching and research are amalgamated in an university center, which becomes university of full excercice (independent of the University of Aix-Marseilles) on July 17th, 1984 under the name of Université with Avignon and the Countries of Vaucluse . At that time, 3 UFR (Letters and Social sciences, Exact sciences and Natural, Sciences and Languages Applied) partagaient 2000 students. The fourth pole, the legal one, will result from the creation of a Faculty of Law instead of an appendix of the University of Aix Marseilles III. Will follow thereafter an Academic institute of Technology in 1990 and one Professionnalisé Academic institute in 1992.

To avoid a too great dispersion of the students (there were 10 sites of establishment in 1991) and redynamiser the downtown area, it is decided to move the various formations within a single site, suited has to accommodate utility services (Library and university canteen in particular). The installation of the old Holy-Marthe hospital is launched, and leads to the re-entry 1997.

Disciplines

The University of Avignon is divided into 4 components (UFR Lettres and Social sciences, UFR Exact sciences and Sciences of Nature, UFR Sciences and Langages Applied and UFR Legal sciences, Politiques and Economic) a Academic institute of technology (4 departments: " Techniques of commercialisation" , " Biologique" genius; , " Genius of Conditioning and Emballage" and " Statistics and data processing of the données") and a Academic institute professionnalized (" Genius Mathémathique and Informatique - GMI-). General practitioner, the University however indicates anchoring around the " fields; Agrosciences" and " Culture and Patrimoine".

Sites

In spite of the concentration of faculties by the creation of the Holy-Marthe site, the university is composed of 5 sites gathered out of two campuses, one in downtown area and the other in Agroparc:
  • the Holy-Marthe campus: principal site, in the walls of the old hospital of the city, gathering 3 of the 4 UFR (30 000 m ²)
  • the Faculty of Science (8 500 m ²)
  • the ex-barracks Chabran (Continuing education) (2 200 m ² in restoration)
  • the site of the IUT and the IUP, on Agroparc (8 000 m ²)
  • the Agrosciences pole, on Agroparc (8 000 m ²)
