University of Arm of Apic
The University of Arm of Apic, is a nominal university located in the hamlet of Bras of Apic (Quebec, Canada), integral part of the municipality of Saint-Cyrille-in Lessard, it even included in the regional Municipality of county (MRC) of Islet. In fact, the residents of this isolated hamlet which counts less than 50 inhabitants and ten houses (and country cottages) had laid out a sign (" University of Arm of Apic") on the pediment of a given up residence, which included/understood before a small catholic vault at the ground floor and a school of row on the floor. This building which, with him only is worth the turning, always exists. The inscription " University of Arm of Apic" (2007 appear still today) and a way bordering it is identified like the “street of the University”.
A single university in Quebec
The idea to found a university (which has only the name of it, even if it has an honorary vice-chancellor, Raoul Hunter) is quite former to the closing of the station in 1986 and the dismantling of the railway, called Tronçon Monck, who goes from Charny until Edmundston to New Brunswick, but is strongly related to the hard activities which proceeded there. As of the beginning of the year 1960, the fact of saying that somebody had studied at the University of Arm of Apic (county of Islet) had become a local expression to make fun of the great universities (since the area is primarily Rural E and does not comprise any university). One however counts there two institutions of higher education, one with Pocatière, the other in Montmagny, called Collège of mainstream education and professional of Pocatière (Cégep). On the Coast-of-South, of Beaumont to Saint-Andre-with-Kamouraska and to the border of the Maine (the United States), to claim to have studied at the University of Arm of Apic " means to have learned; on the tas" and a valorization for the inhabitants of the area constitutes who were not likely to go to the University. Indeed, the majority of them are devoted to work of the farm or the forest (the agricultural or forest career having been for a long time two principal employment opportunities of the area), although the large companies of the littoral of Islet and the area of Pocatière, just as that of Montmagny offer many industrial outlets now.
Thereafter, a series of products (tee-shirt, pullovers, etc) posting the name of the University with a logo representing a catholic vault at the ground floor and a school on the floor, located at Bras of Apic, in the municipality of Saint-Cyrille-of-Lessard, were sold by the authors to the visitors.
This quite real vault, doubled of a school deserves the turning for a visit.
Moreover, caps with a logo on which a moose was reproduced were also printed; these products were available to only the Dépanneur village (known as the " Break-down mechanic of Université" , located opposite the " campus"), which closed shop about 2005.
Newspapers as the Sun devoted articles to this " Campus of the heureux" (as an inscription indicates it being reproduced on a rock beside the establishment). In 1991, Charles Côté, mentions the existence of the university of Arm of Apic at the sides of quite real the Université of Quebec with Chicoutimi in a sociological and demographic study entitled Désintégration of the areas. Durable underdevelopment in Quebec ! (see electronic edition, p. 72)
It is always possible to see the building of the University today, this regional phenomenon which did not lose anything of its strength. Arm of Apic is however nothing any more but one borough almost deserted and concerning the municipality of Saint-Cyrille-of-Lessard.
