University from Quebec in Montreal

The Université from Quebec in Montreal ( UQAM ) is a French-speaking university located in the sector of the downtown area of the town of Montreal at the Quebec, affiliated with the Université of Quebec.

Overflight

It was created the April 9th 1969 by the government of Quebec, thanks to the fusion of the École of the Art schools of Montreal, the Collège Sainte-Marie and three teacher training schools.

With the autumn 2006, the UQAM counted 41.176 students registered on campuses, distributed on three academic cycles, 973 professors and 1.786 part-time lecturer. By taking account of the programs offered remotely, the University counts more 60.000 students what makes of it the largest university of the francophonie.

The university is located at the downtown area of Montreal: the central campus is close to the subway station Berri-UQAM (district to which it gives the name of Latin Quarter), whereas that of sciences is close to the station Place-of-Arts (where the construction of a new house began in 2004).

The University offers formation on its campus montréalais like in its four regional centres: UQAM Lanaudière, UQAM Laval, UQAM Montérégie and UQAM West-in-the island. To this offer is added remote teaching since the fastening of TV-university (TÉLUQ) to the UQAM in 2005

The virtual exposure to let itself tell the UQAM - 1960 to 2001 make it possible to discover the university on three shutters.

In 2007, the UQAM saw a major financial crisis when it is revealed that the ex-vice-chancellor Roch Denis holds a share of responsibility for the fiasco for the Complexe for sciences and of the Ilôt traveller.

Visual identity of the UQAM

The logotype of the University from Quebec in Montreal was created in 1997 by the designer Frederic Metz, today at the same time professor and director of the module of graphic Design of the École of design of the UQAM.

At the time of the revealing of the visual identity of the university, an outcry is raised as for the use of the grave accent (With) in the logotype. Indeed, the typographical rules and the recommendations of the Québécois Office of the French language are contradicted. On the one hand, an official acronym should not contain accentuated characters. In addition, contrary to a widespread faulty use in the francophonie, the Office encourages the use of accents on capital letters.

Lastly, the graphic standards of the UQAM clearly stipulate which its logotype contains a With but that its acronym should never include accent. The With is thus only regarded as a stylized drawing.
