University Radboud de Nimègue
The university Radboud de Nimègue (in Dutch: Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen ) is a Université with Nimègue, with the Netherlands.
History
The university Radboud de Nimègue was founded in 1923 as catholic Université of Nimègue. It started with 27 professors and 189 students. In 2007 there are 450 professors and more: 17500 students.Nimègue had a first university of 1655 with 1679. This Académie illustrates was struck by the plague of 1665 then by the French invasion of 1672. Following a lack of funds, it closed its doors in 1679.
In 1905 the Foundation St Radboud takes the initiative to open a catholic university by collecting funds in the churches. Several city-candidates propose. Thanks to one of the founders of the branch Dutchwoman of Unilever which offers the Heyendael field for a guilder, the foundation chooses the town of Nimègue. The university opens in 1923 in old houses of Master, downtown, with, amongst other things, a faculty of theology.
The war of 1940-1945
The young university paid a heavy tribute with the war of 1940-1945. It loses professors re-elected such as Robert Regout and Titus Brandsma, preachers resistant who die in the camp of Dachau. Even after that, the Hermesdorf vice-chancellor refuses in 1943 to present to the students the Declaration honesty required by the occupant. The buildings suffer from the bombardment of February 22nd, 1944 by the Americans.
The years 1950-1980
Nimègue very quickly has several professors of famous international: L.J. Rogier, Anton van Duinkerken, Schillebeeckx. The number of students grows of: 3000 in 1960 with: 15000 in 1980. The number of faculties goes up to 8 and the Heyendael field becomes a true university campus to 3 km of the downtown area. The university takes part in the vagueness of democratization of the years 1960-1970 with its tumultuous meetings and an occupation of the buildings.
Since 1980
Since 1980, the university seeks to develop the scientific research. The number of faculties is changed to 9 and of research take place in 22 institutions, of new laboratories scientific and medical are built. The university has an research institute nanometric and one of the four strongest magnets in the world. The university medical center St Radboud (of the name of a bishop of Utrecht, owner of the scientists) is increased. In 2004, to express the bond with this hospital, the catholic university of Nimègue ( KUN ) changes name and becomes Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen, ( RUN ).
