University Pierre-and-Marie-Curie

The Université Pierre-and-Marie-Curie (or in the past University Paris VI ) is a university of Science S and Médecine located in the Latin Quarter of Paris and heiress of the Faculty of Science of the Université of Paris.

The senior Marc Zamansky defines it as “matérialisation of the scientific thought in the middle of Paris”.

Important of approximately 30.000 students, it is the only scientific French university, principal heiress of the Faculty of Science of the university of Paris.

The university Pierre and Marie Curie classified among the best of Europe, is very famous for its immense campus, its number of students and much of other things:

“4.000 researchers, 161 research laboratories, 30.000 students (22 000 in sciences, 8.000 in medicine), 250 contracts of research signed in 2000, more than 10 start-up born under the impulse of its researchers, 52 patents held in freehold and 19 joint ownership, 17 deposits of software and a wallet of 32 licenses… these eloquent figures illustrate the topicality of the University Paris VI.

Principal heiress of the Faculty of Science in Sorbonne, located in the middle of the Latin Quarter, the Pierre University and Marie Curie is indeed recognized in the whole world for her high level activities, as well in the field of research as that of the formation. ”

Recognized universally for the quality of its research and its training in mathematics (classified first world university in mathematics), she demerit not vis-a-vis Paris XI - Orsay in physics since one of her laboratories, the Laboratoire Kastler-Brossel (divided with the National university) saw one of her research directors, Claude Cohen-Tannoudji, to receive the Nobel Prize of physics in 1997.

Thus mathematics of the UPMC is classified first world, that chemistry is in the “signal 5%” of the best world establishments and that physics, engineering, sciences of the ground and sciences of materials are in the “signal 10%” of the best world establishments.

The Université Jiao Tong of Shanghai carries out since 2003 a world classification of the universities, balancing their efforts in the field of Research, like on the quality of their teaching in which the University Pierre and Marie Curie obtained the following classifications:

It has also maintained for a few years its first position in the world classification of the very famous American scientific publication, very appraisal of the researchers of the whole world Science Watch.

Just as in the classification carried out by Times Stores (a little less based on Research, but a little more on the performances of the students and old student) where Paris 6 holds the 88e place in 2005 (57e in 2004) on a world level, and the 30e place at the European level; more specifically, the 20th place in Signal 50 of Sciences Academic Ranking off World Universities from the Times in 2005 .

September 28th, 2007, the body teaching-research of Paris VI, in collaboration with other Parisian universities and universities, comes to officially inaugurate the Foundation mathematical sciences of Paris (the foundation was creates in December 2006). This network asserts more than 500 researchers and post doctorands to make of it a network of excellence in the area.
