University Paris XIII

The university Paris XIII , or University Paris-North , is one of the thirteen universities which succeeded the Université of Paris on January 1st, 1971.

For the academic year 2005-2006, it counted 22.914 teaching inscriptions on its 3 campuses:

14.149 registered voters on the campus of Villetaneuse,
6.860 on that of Bobigny
1.905 students with the IUT of Saint-Denis.

A quarter of the registered voters are in continuing education and have between 30 and 55 years.

Its students live the Seine-Saint-Denis (33%), the Val-d'Oise (22%), Paris (11%) and the remainder of France.

Really multi-field, the UP13 is a major pole of teaching and research in the north of Paris.

History

The university Paris XIII results from the will of the Université of Paris, with beginning of the year 60, to open a third Faculty of Science in Villetaneuse. In September 1969 is thus created in Saint-Denis an university center with scientific vocation having statute of faculty within the Université of Paris, named University center Saint-Denis - Villetaneuse. In 1970 is decided the division of the university of Paris in 13 universities, Villetaneuse having to accommodate the university Paris XIII. The realization of this new university was conceived by the architects, Mr. Fainsilber and Mrs. Anspach, within the framework of the restoration of the commune of Villetaneuse. The first stage of this realization was the construction of the literary and legal Center, designed to receive approximately 5.000 students. A first building, finished in October 1970, made it possible to ensure back to university December and to accommodate 1.500 first-year students of right, economic scenes, letters and social sciences. In 1972, the university Paris XIII includes/understands two thus library, the Library of the university center of Saint-Denis and the Library of the university center of Villetaneuse.

Let us recall finally that the university Paris VIII, currently located at Saint-Denis, was created in Vincennes in 1968 and was moved only in 1980.

Letters, social sciences and companies

The unit of formation and research of the letters, social sciences and companies has seven departments and ten research laboratories. It counts 3840 students (2004-2005) including 2322 preparing one of the 16 licenses, 845 preparing one of the 17 masters and 183 preparing a doctorate.

The unit of formation and search for right, social sciences political and, placed under the authority of the senior Robert Étien counts approximately 4.000 students, 100 teachers and 24 administrative staffs, and is located on the campus of Villetaneuse.

The UFR prepares with diplomas:

Sciences and technology

The scientific and polytechnic Institute called “Galileo Institute” was created in 1991 like internal institute of the university Paris XIII by the meeting of the old unit of formation and of research known as “centers scientific and polytechnic” and the two dies of engineers of the time (materials and telecommunications). Two dies of engineers were then added there: software engineering, and mathematics applied and scientific computation.

The scientific Institute and polytechnic Galileo is devoted to training and research in mathematics, physics, chemistry and data processing.

Teaching

He proposes the preparation of the following diplomas:

The unit of formation and search for health, medicine and biology human, known as “Léonard de Vinci” is established, partly, on the industrial waste land of the famous newspaper of pre-war period the Illustration , currently undergoing large work of restoration (new amphithêatre, new gymnasium, new library…)

Association of the medical students of Bobigny

The Association of the medical students of Bobigny (in summary AEMB) is an association law 1901. It is affiliated with ANEMF, its goal is to propose services with the students of UFR SMBH such as the courses, annals of contest and of examination, of the reductions on the books, on the medical device,… association takes also important actions of Public health within the university like Telethon. Its role is also, via student elected officials, to defend the students and to try to improve the conditions of teaching and work of the students within the Board of trustees of the UFR, but also within the central councils of the university and within the Board of directors of CROUS of Creteil.

Academic institute of technology of Villetaneuse

The IUT of Villetaneuse trains 1400 students within five departments:

Academic institute of technology of Saint-Denis

The IUT of Saint-Denis was created in 1968. It currently counts eight department of teaching (between brackets, their creation date):

Academic institute of technology of Bobigny

The IUT of Bobigny is installed in the splendid building of the old printing works of the Illustration rehabilitated by the architect Paul Chemetov. It became in 2001 a component with whole share of the university. It ensures the technological formation in three departments: social careers, administration and business management, and services and communication networks. It counts nearly 800 students He proposes the preparation of the following diplomas thus:

3 university degrees of technology in: social careers, administration and business management, services and communication networks.
5 professional licenses in: activities and techniques of communication, management of the organizations, social intervention, activities and techniques of communication, social intervention.
2 diplomas of university, one in maintenance and administration of networks, the other in international technological studies.

The IUT of Bobigny also prepares with the Diplôme of State of assistant of social service and with the Diplôme of State relating to the functions of animation.

Doctoral schools

The Northern Paris university counts 32 research laboratories gathered within two doctoral schools, Galileo and Erasme .

The doctoral school Galileo gathers 15 specialized laboratories in the disciplines: mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology and health, data processing and engineerings. 190 doctorands are accommodated there, with 40 to 45 new registered voters per annum, of which the half coming from other establishments such as the polytechnic school or the national universities. On average, 35 theses are constant there each year.

The doctoral school Erasme in social sciences succeeds January 1st, 2007 at two preexistent schools. Its 16 laboratories interressant with the fields “Economy, company, industry and culture” and “Subjects, codes, cultures, spaces and companies” gather 96 readers for 510 registered doctorands and an average of 50 theses supported per annum.
