University Lyon I

The university Claude Bernard Lyon 1 (UCBL), created officially in 1971, gathered the Faculty of Science and medicine and pharmacy. By its manpower, its budget and the number of its research laboratories, it represents the principal establishment of higher education of the area and figure in the five large French universities. Since 2007 it belongs to the Université of Lyon.

The University Claude Bernard Lyon 1 owes his name to the physiologist éponyme. The UCBL is the heiress of the Faculty of Science of Lyon, founded in 1833 and of the medical college, founded in 1874.

Although multi-localized, the principal buildings of the university are located on the campus of Endowed It with Villeurbanne: they shelter the administration and the major part of scientific UFR; among the other important sites, one can quote the field of Gerland, with the National university. The Health sector, as for him, is composed inter alia field Rockefeller, medical college Laennec, Southern Lyon Hospital.

History

Lyon does not have the gloss of a long university past. The Middle Ages did not bequeath the glory of a Sorbonne to him nor the titles of scientific nobility which make the pride of Montpellier. Oxford or Salamanque has their walls covered with vegetation by the centuries. Nothing like it in Lyon. Its University goes back officially to yesterday. It is the law of July 10th, 1896 which made it possible to gather in a University old independent faculties (Sciences, Médecine, Droit and Letters) of which oldest go back to 1808 (Faculty of Science).

The University Claude Bernard Lyon 1 is created by decree in December 1970. It includes/understands in a few years several sites (first period of development): Barn White (Medical college installed since 1930, today accommodating the UFR of Medicine Lyon Grange White and Lyon Northern, the Institute of Sciences Pharmaceutical and Biological), Campus of Endowed (Faculty of Science which is installed between 1963 and 1964 on the old hippodrome of the Large Camp of Villeurbanne), Southern Lyon (Medical college created in 1970), the Field of Buire (UFR of Medicine RTH Laennec and Odontology, built in 1974), the Observatory of Lyon installed on the commune of Saint-Genis-Laval (establishment created in 1878 and attached to the University in June 1899 and the site of the station of marine biology of Tamaris-on-Sea (near of Toulon, Seyne-sur-Mer), founded in 1890.

With time, the University Claude Bernard Lyon 1 grows rich in sites at the same time as develop the research laboratories (today more than one hundred) and the number of the students who come to be formed there (today more than 28.000). The sites of the second period of development are those of the street of France with Villeurbanne (IUT B), of Borough in Bresse (which accommodates 2 departments of IUT has), of Roanne, Gerland (which shelters since 2005 the Institute of Financial Science and Insurances).

Organization

The University Claude Bernard Lyon 1 is directed by a President, elected for 5 years. It is assisted in its action by a made up presidential team vice-presidents of the three councils, other vice-presidents delegated for a particular field and of a general secretary who directs the administration and is responsible for management. The three councils are elected by all the members of the university community and are composed representatives of the students, personnel teaching, other personnel and of some external personalities chosen by the elected members:

  • the Council of the Studies and the University Life (40 members) proposes the teaching orientations and takes care of the quality of the university life. Bond more
  • the Scientific advice (40 members) lays down the policy of research and valorization.

Given trainings

It accommodates each year more than 29.525 students of which more than 60% are registered in professionnalized dies: Health, I.U.T., DEUST, licenses professional and masters professional, engineers. Almost all the formations of sciences and the physical-activities and sporting adopted the European system of higher education called LMD in France. All the great scientific disciplines are taught in Lyon 1: the actuary profession, biochemistry, biology, chemistry, electronic engineering, data processing, management, mathematics, mechanics, physics, sciences of the ground,… In Health, our offer of formation, very broad, authorizes a professionalisation in medicine, pharmacy, odontology, midwife and in six paramedical professions: kinesitherapist, ergothérapeute, audioprothesist, speech therapist, orthoptist and psychomotrician.

International relations

Lyon 1 develops year after year a policy of international relations increasingly dynamic. It devotes a big part of its budget to mobility coed and teaching.

Thanks to the international programs and a very voluntary policy also of the Rhone-Alps Area, many students have opportunity of carrying out part of their formation abroad; this is the pledge of an open-minded essential to their future professional success.

As for the frequentation of Lyon 1 by the foreign students, it accounts approximately for 12% of manpower, which locates it in the national average, but with a strong growth each year. This mobility is, it also, in increasing constant.
