Universities in the United Kingdom
The British universities can be divided into 5 categories:
-
the Ancient universities (old universities) founded before the 19th century.
- the Red Brig universities (red brick universities) founded between the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century and which hold their names of the color of bricks used to build them.
- the New Universities (new universities) more recently founded and divided into two categories:
- those created in the the Sixties, often named Punt Knell Universities and which were initially called New Universities during their creation.
- those created in 1992 or in the years following and known under the names of Post-1992 universities . They are mainly Institutes of technology ( polytechnics ) and establishment of higher education ( colleges off Higher Education )) who acquired their statute of university after 1992. They are these new establishment which is called New Universities .
- the Open University , single British university of teaching remotely founded in 1968.
The access to the British Université S is possible after obtaining the Have-level, diploma enclosing the secondary studies.
There exist three types of diplomas delivered by these universities:
- professional diplomas: Higher National Diploma
- the first dismantle
- the higher dismantle by instruction
The two most famous universities are Oxford and Cambridge.
Governorship
With the the United Kingdom, the universities are legally independent and can freely recruit their personnel and their students. They are generally managed by three organizations: the council where the external personalities are majority, the Senate which is occupied of what milked with the enseignement and the Short with the very limited role. The more recent universities are managed by a Board from 12 to 25 members where the external personalities are majority and by a Academic Board of 30 members where the direction of the university is majority.
