The university of Chile , (" U"), since 1843 exists.

It enorgueillit of two Nobel Prize (Pablo Neruda and Gabriela Mistral). Moreover, it was the place of studies of 17 president (E) S of Chile of which Michelle Bachelet, the current president of Chile.

The University took largely part in the rise of the country and always holds a great place in the Chilean life. It is with PUC the best university of the country and the candidates are numerous, in particular because it is a university of State, which does not mean that it is public as in certain countries, but that the State subsidizes it for each pupil. Its campus is divided into several places of Santiago according to the field of study of each faculty.

U is more than one university, it is also a radio, a team of foot and a theater, the whole nationals. There is for example a Musée of American popular art.

For the Chilean ones, to integrate U is synonymous with a school great success and a future professional who seems very positive. There exist much less possibilities of studies than in certain European countries or in North America. There is a diploma of the university or one does not have a diploma in kind, from where passion for these prestigious universities which are the PUC and the Chile (another name given by the Chilean ones to the university of Chile). The Chilean ones use also the U to name the university or the football team.

U is the oldest university of Chile. It was rested by the Chilien state the September 17th 1842. It is spread out over five campuses distributed in Santiago and gathering 26.000 students.

In the world classification of the universities (2006) realized by the university Jiao Tong of Shangai (China), Chile is the single Chilean university present, in the same way the Webometrics classification of the month of January 2007 the place first in Chile, fourth in Latin America and 265è world

Doctor Honoris Causae : Is the highest distinction granted by Chile. Personalities such as Kofi Annan, Lionel Jospin, Lech Walesa or Alain Touraine obtained this distinction.
