Universal Binaries or UB , way of Apple of indicating a binary file which can be carried out nativement on the processors Intel and PowerPC. Universal Binaries was presented at the time of the WWDC 2005 at the time of the advertisement of the passage of Apple towards Intel. The system determines if an application is in Universal Binaries by its heading. An application in Universal Binaries contains two binary files, for each type of processor. When the system launches an application in Universal Binaries , it chooses the good binary file and carries out it.

All the applications are not in Universal Binaries . For an application which is not in Universal Binaries , the system functioning with an Intel processor uses Rosetta to translate the binary file of the application compiled for the processors PowerPC into achievable code by the processors Intel.

Version 2.1 of Xcode makes it possible to compile applications in Universal Binaries .
