United States European Command

The United States European Command (EUCOM) is one of the eleven Unified Combatant Command depend on the Department of Defense (DoD).

Operational since the 1952, its General headquarter is with Stuttgart in Germany. The EUCOM is the only regional operational command equipped with a advanced general headquarter deployed apart from the United States.

Its commander has a double responsibility since he also assumes the role of commander-in-chief of combined for Europe (SACEUR) in the hierarchy of NATO.

Zone of influence

Its zone of influence in 2007 covers 34 million square kilometers and 91 countries including/understanding the Europe, the Turkey, the Greenland, old the Soviet Union except for the five Republics of Central Asia and the Africa except for the Egypt, of the Sudan, Djibouti, the Kenya, the Somalia, the Érythrée, the Ethiopia and Madagascar.

With the creation of a new command specific to Africa envisaged in 2008, this continent will not be any more under its responsibility.

Actions

The EUCOM was in first line for the operations during the cold war or at the end of the Années 1980, the forces of the EUCOM counted more than 315.000 people divided in 1.421 installations.

In 2005, they do not employ any more that 112.000 people and do not count any more that 491 installations and the final objective of the restructuring plan is to reduce these figures from approximately 40%.

During the War of Kosovo, this command played a big role in collaboration with NATO.

It controlled also the air forces at the beginning of the base of Incirlik in Turkey during the Guerre in Iraq.

Missions

The EUCOM has the roles:
  • to ensure the preparation of its forces to carry out a whole sequence of operations unilaterally either, or in.liaison.with the allies
  • to improve transatlantic safety via the support for NATO
  • to promote regional stability
  • to fight against terrorism
  • to develop the American interests in the zone of responsibility.

According to the commander of the EUCOM, United States European Command forms part of the comprehensive view:

  • Europe, a world partner
  • self-sufficing and stable Africa
  • most of the Middle East in peace
  • Of the organizations of qualified regional safety
