United States Army
The United States Army is the Army of the the United States of America.
History of US Army
August 1st The continental Congrès created the continental Armée the June 14th 1775 before official creation with the United States to be opposed to the British metropolis during the Guerre of independence of the United States of America. After the war, the Congrès of the United States created the Army of the United States the June 3rd 1784 after the dissolution of the continental army which will be under the control of the Département of the War until the fusion of this one in the Department of Defense created in 1947.
The 19th century
Its manpower in times of peace will be very modest compared to the population of the country until the middle of the 20th century.
Three years after the War of 1812 against the British Empire, the army counted only 5 000 men.
In 1860, it was made up 16 637 soldiers of active.
During the American Civil War, manpower go up to 1 million men under the flags in 1865.

In 1882, at the time of the Conquest of the West and the Indian Wars, one counted 25 000 men divided between 25 Regiment S of Infantry (including 2 composed of Afro-American S, the Buffalo Soldier S), 10 of Cavalry and 5 of Artillery and services ancillary. The army recruits by means of voluntary engagements, contracted for 5 years.
At the time of the Guerre Spanish-American of 1898, in spite of the courage of the volunteers who faced the Spanish army, it is certain that it was the US Navy which gained the conflict by running the opposing fleet thus cutting the lines of supply Spanish.
Following this conflict, the army and the US Marine Body were confronted with hard a Guérilla with the Filipino until 1902 but of the skirmishes will continue until 1913. The human losses will be of 4 324 American soldiers (of which between 1 000 and 1 500 with the engagements), 2 000 Filipino police officers of the new administration against between 16 000 and 20 000 soldiers and guerillas and between 250 000 and 1 000 000 of civilians victims direct and indirect of this conflict.
The First World War

When the First World War burst in 1914 in Europe, the army has only 3 divisions of infantry, one of cavalry for which it is necessary to add a Brigade of infantry stationed in Hawaii, that is to say 75 000 men.
In 1916, the National Defense Act envisages an increase in manpower until 175 000 matched men of the creation of 7 additional regiments.
This army does not have however anything a crack corps equipped well. The equipments in modern material are timid and late. Thus, between 1896 and 1916, the Congress grants only one annual credit line of 150 000 US dollars for the purchase of Mitrailleuse S. This figure will spend the day to the following day to 12 million at the end of 1916 when the war was inevitable, moreover little accustomed to such means, the army will give itself ten month to choose its material. As regards aviation also, with an budget appropriation of 450 000 $, the 5 years which preceded the entry in war transfer a ridiculous effort in this field compared to the European armies which in France and Germany devoted 40 times more effort in this field.
When in 1917, the the United States entered the conflict, their late and hard engagement was however massive. The American Expeditionnary Forces, sent in France under the command of John Pershing, precedes already the immense capacity of mobilization available to the country, for little which it decides to implement and which one leaves him time to prepare.
In order to reinforce the Moral allied, a small quota symbolic system was sent in France which unloaded on June 26th, 1917 with Saint-Nazaire.
The French and English military chiefs wished to amalgamate the American soldiers in the various existing armies but the Pershing general insisted vigorously for the task force remained an independent entity and as of on October 21st, the 14 500 men of the the 1st division of American infantry were assigned to a relatively calm sector of the face, close to Toul.
At the time of the great offensive of the German Armed in March 1918, the gravity of the military situation leads to entrust to the general Ferdinand Foch on April 3rd “the strategic direction of military operations” then the April 17th the title of “general-in-chief of the allied armies”.
Pershing thus placed at its disposal four divisions then present and the first active participation of those Ci place the May 28th 1918 when the 28e regiment of the 1st division was committed close to the small town of Cantigny in the south-east of Amiens.
This unit took the city and defended it against seven German counter-attacks, this action contributed to show the Germans whom they were wrong to see in the civilians in uniforms “a simple troop of amateurs”.
May 31st, 1918, at the time of the Second battle of the Marne, the 2nd division of infantry and the regiments of Marines reinforced the French colonial troops in the sector of Castle-Thierry, they pushed back German on other side of the Marne and drove out the enemy of Belleau Wood between 6 and on June 25th.
July 15th, the German généralissime Erich Ludendorff tried, once again to tear off the victory, this time in Champagne, between Rheims and the Argonne. 85 000 Americans took part in the counter-offensive started as of on July 18th which obliged the German forces to be folded up until the Vesle.
The August 10th 1918, Foch authorized the constitution of the 1st strong American Army of 550 000 men who transfer themselves to assign the part of the face corresponding to projecting allemande of Saint-Mihiel, in the south-east of Verdun.
September 12th, this army, supported by a few French units launched out to the attack. In three days, it made 16 000 prisoners and captured 440 gun S by reducing this head of bridge.
The September 26th 1918, Pershing, which had 1  now; 200 000 men, 2 417 guns and 324 tanks at its disposal, launched its forces between Meuse and Argonne on a face of 24 kilometers, within the framework of the launched massive onslaught all along the face between Verdun and Ypres. It was a question for the Americans of going to Sedan and of trying to cut the line of Railroad Mézières - Metz.
They hustled, without regard to their enormous losses, the Germans against whom they sprang with discovered in formation tight; The German lines started to disintegrate on November 1st; the 7, the Americans entered the suburb of Sedan, established heads of bridges on Right Bank of the Meuse and cut the vital railroad for the German Logistique.
November 9th, the German imperial mode collapsed and, the November 11th 1918, the armistice was signed.
November 11th, 1918, 4,8 million American was under the flags and more than two million Sammies were in continental Europe.
The American forces obviously contributed more modestly than the others combined to the victories if it is considered that they lost only 116 000 men (53 000 killed with the combat and 63 000 accidental deaths or diseases) and had 206 000 wounded whereas the French Army had 1 385 000 killed, but they arrived just in time to help them to support the large last offensive German.
At the beginning of this offensive, on April 1st 1918, the German Armée had on the Front of the West a numerical superiority of 324 000 men. As from June, the massive arrival of the American troops made it possible to tip the scales and in November, the Allies and Associated exceeded their adversaries of 600 000 men.
The interval wars
The Second world war
At the time of the Attack on Pearl Harbor at the end of 1941, US Army counts in its rows 1 600 000 men. This attack, “marked seal of the infamy” (F.D Roosevelt) precipitately plunges the United States in the second world war; the American army will initially take part at the time of this war in defense at the time of the beginning of the Campagnes of the Pacific at the time of the catch of Philippines by the Japanese Armée then in offensive in particular at the time of its first large Débarquement at the time of the Opération Torch at the end of 1942 during the Guerre of the desert in North Africa.
On the face European, it unloaded with the allies initially in Italy in 1943 then in 1944, its great operation was the Opération Overlord, in Normandy which combined with the Opération Anvil Dragoon in Provence allowed the release in a few months of France and part of the Benelux. The airborne Opération Market Garden with the Netherlands was a failure then the German counter-attack at the time of the Bataille of the Ardennes at the end of December 1944 delayed the final offensive in Germany which after the junction of allied the Westerners and the Red Army on the Elba on April 25th, 1945 and the fall with Berlin capitulated finally the May 8th 1945.
On the face of the Pacific, multiple bloody unloadings in partnership with the US Marine Body made it possible to take again the lost territories, to nibble defenses of the empire of Japan and to approach its metropolis. Whereas one prepared a gigantic operation on the ground of the Japanese archipelago, the atomic Bombardements of Hiroshima and Nagasaki combined with the entry on the lists of the USSR in this countryside made finally capitulate the Japanese government the August 15th 1945.
The cold war
To the release of the War of Korea in 1950, manpower had fallen down to 550 000 men.
After cold war and the war against terror
August 1stSee also: War against terrorism, War of Afghanistan (2001), War in Iraq
Following the long-term operations in progress within the framework of the War against terrorism and the need increased for forces on the ground for " tenir" the ground in the War in Iraq; the fall of manpower since the end of the cold war is stopped and it is prévut that the format of the Army is of: 547000 people by 2010.

These three commands are regional unit-frameworks, commands and not of the forces of combat.
The US Third Army order troops of the branch “Army” of United States Central Command. It does not have an pre-affected unit, and is reinforced according to the needs and with the requirements by levy on the American forces of strategic reserve (in particular on the III Bodies and XVIII Airborne Corps (including the 82 {{E}} and the 101 {{E}} airborne, famous divisions to have fought in Normandy in June 1944, thus of course that the Army National Guard ) like in units of the National guard, when they are activated.

It is organized in a way similar to the active one. It includes/understands eight division, nine brigades independent ( Separate ) and of many other units of lower size:
Divisions
Divisions of ARNG are of two types: “mixed” ( Activates Component/Reserve Component or AC/RC , i.e. they include/understand a core of forces of active around the staff to which incorporates units of combat of the National guard) and standard.

Divisions of the National guard are to two or three combat brigades ( Infantry or Armored Brigades , sometimes quite simply Brigades ), an air brigade of tactical support ( Aviation Brigade ), plus the units of divisional support and support ( Division Artillery or Divarty and Division Support Command DSC ). They have a diagram similar to those of divisions of the active one, but their units are reduced and fewer.

United States Army Reserve
Continental United States Armies
To the three armies mentioned in the units of active two continental armies are added ( Continental United States Armies or CONUSA ) which frame the units of the United States Army Reserve and those of the United States Army National Guard present in their zone of responsibility:
-
the US First Army is a staff which ensures the instruction and checks the capacities of mobilization of the units of ARNG localized in his zone of responsibility (States in the east for the Mississippi: Alabama, Connecticut, cd., Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, the Mississippi, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia and Wisconsin, like in Puerto Rico and in Virgin Islands). It also provides assistance and support for the instruction to the units of USAR before they join a theater of operations. Lastly, it plans safety and ensures the protection of the military or governmental installations which are in its zone of responsibility, and to the need provides an assistance to the civil authorities in the event of crisis not-soldier ( peacetime crisis ). Its HQ with Strong Gillem, Georgia.
-
the US Fifth Army has the same missions as the US First Army near the formations of ARNG located its zone of responsibility (States in the west for the Mississippi: Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, North Dakota, South Dakota, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wyoming). It also ensures the operational conditioning of the units of USAR which leave to the combat or on mission, ensures the protection of the military and governmental installations of its zone of responsibility and provides in the event of crisis not-soldier an assistance to the civil authorities. Its HQ with Strong Sam Houston, Texas.
Having units of the US Army Reserve , both CONUSA thus ensure the instruction and the coordination of the units of ARNG , and only with the margin those of USAR . The units of the reserve all are subordinated, since 1995, on the continental territory, with a general command of the American reserves, the United States Army Reserve Command ( USARC ), of Strong McPherson, Georgia.
Divisions
The United States Army Reserve includes/understands thirteen divisions, of which five depend directly on both Continental United States Armies :
-
75th Division (Training Support) , of Houston, Texas (under the authority of the US Fifth Army ).
- 77th Division (Reinforcement Training Support) , of Strong Totten, New York.
- 78th Division (Training Support) (“ Lightning Division ”), of Edison, New Jersey (under the authority of the US First Army ).
- 80th Division (Institutional Training) , of Richmond, Virginia.
- 84th Division (Institutional Training) , of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
- 85th Division (Training Support) (“ Custer Division ”), of Arlington Heights, Illinois (under the authority of the US First Army ).
- 87th Division (Training Support) (“ Golden delicious Acorn ”), of Birmingham, Alabama (under the authority of the US First Army ).
- 91st Division (Training Support) , of Houston, Texas (under the authority of the “US Fifth Army”).

- 108th Division (Institutional Training) , of Charlotte, North Carolina.
These divisions have very specific organizations and missions. They are unit-frameworks in charge of the instruction of the units of the Reserve Component which are attached to them. The five divisions attached to both CONUSA have for their part for mission of maintaining in operational condition and of preparing with the deployment overseas and the combat the units of the Army National Guard located the zone of responsibility for their army of membership.
