History
The company was created in 1907, under the name of United Close Associations , by the editor E.W. Scripps which positioned its company like a powerful alternative to the whole Associated Press. In 1959, United Close amalgamated with International News Service, which had been created in 1909 by the editor William Randolph Hearst. The new group was then baptized United Close International. In the Years 1980 and 1990, UPI suffered much from the changes which underwent the American press and in particular of the discontinuance of business of many evening papers. After having known 7 owners different of 1992 with 2000, UPI was repurchased by News World Communications, the press group which has the Washington Times . Helen the Thomas, most famous of the reporters of the agency, resigned following this repurchase, denouncing the bonds between the Times and the Église of the Unification.
The employees and freelance journalists of UPI are called the Unipressers .
