Chronology

From 1919 to 1940

  • May 1919: The Postal service U.S. starts a service of “flying post-office employees”, primarily composed veterans of the First World War.
  • 1924 : The connection of the east coast at the west coast of the the United States passes from 82 hours (plane + train) to 32 hours.
  • February 2nd, 1925: The American Congress authorizes the signing of contracts of airmail with privately held companies. Commercial air transport is born with the creation of new companies which pose their options on various routes.
  • April 6th, 1926: Varney Air Lines inaugurates the first contractual air-mail service in the United States, of Pasco (Washington D.C.) with Elko (Nevada), via Boise (Idaho). The history of United Airlines starts with this connection, assured by Leon Cuddeback with the orders a biplane Swallow with open cockpit.
  • May 12th, 1926: National Air Transport inaugurates an air-mail service between Chicago, Kansas City and Dallas.

After September 2001

  • September 11th, 2001:
    • 09:03, the second Boeing diverted, is flight 175 of United Airlines, coming from Boston and bound for Los Angeles; it transported 56 passengers and 9 team members. It is crushed against the Southern tower of the World Trade Center.
    • 11:26, a second plane of UAL which ensured the flight Newark-San Francisco crashe in Pennsylvania.
  • December 2002: United Airlines is placed under the protection of the American law on the bankruptcies, said “ Chapitre 11 ”.
  • June 2004: The American office of stabilization of air transport refused the application deposited by UAL of a guarantee of loan for 1,6 billion US$.
  • August 2004: In a request lodged with the judge of the bankruptcies, UAL informs that it could have to completely cease the additional amount of its funds of retirement house, after the rejection in June of a federal guarantee for a new loan, and that it “ could possibly be in the obligation to carry out the abandonment and the substitution of the whole of its pension plans ”. The obligations of additional amount of its funds currently rise for UAL to 8,3 billion US Dollar.
