John Zorn is a saxophonist and American Compositeur born the September 2nd 1953 with New York.

He is the author of many works exploring a large variety of kinds among which the Jazz, the Rock, the Punk hardcore, the traditional one, the Klezmer, film music and of cartoon and the impromptu Musique.

Although each one of its works can refer to one or the other of these kinds, John Zorn regards himself as belonging to “the avant-garde” which calls in question and pushes back the borders of art to create a universe which is clean for him. The enormous density of the work of John Zorn, influential and varied, defies any academic classification. Originating in New York, it is a major figure of the Downtown scene since 1975, incorporating a range of musicians in various formats compositionnels. He learned the alchemical synthesis with Harry Smith, structural ontology with Richard Foreman, how to make art from nothing with Jack Smith, the cathartic expression at Sluggs and the hermetic intuition with Joseph Cornell.

Very early, its inspirations come to him from American innovators such as Ives, John Cage, Carter and Partch, of Europeans Alban Berg, Igor Stravinski, Pierre Boulez, Mauricio Kagel, Varèse and of the film type-setters Bernard Herrmann, Ennio Morricone and Stalling, as well as theater, films, literature and art of avant-garde.

Its collaborations are numerous: Jennifer Charles (of Elysian Fields), Bill Frisell, Ikue Mori, Yuji Takahashi, Bill Laswell, Derek Bailey, Haino Keiji, Yamatsuka Eye, Fred Frith, William Winant, Marc Ribot, Mick Harris, Yoshida Tatsuya, Mike Patton, Eugene Chadbourne, Trevor Dunn, Greg Cohen, Joey Baron, Tim Sparks, Anthony Coleman… It also formed several groups of which most known are Naked City, Painkiller, Masada and Cobra.

Its music is played throughout the world and of many formations such as the Kronos Quartet, the American Composers Orchestra and the Orchestra of the WDR of Cologne ordered works to him.

He is also the owner of the label of avant-garde Tzadik and a club in New York the Stone .

In 2006, John Zorn is member elect of the MacArthur Fellows Program.
