Union of the artists

L Union of the artists , shortened in UDA , is a professional Syndicat whose principal task consists in representing the artists Québécois. Its statute is officially recognized under the terms of a Québécois law since December 1987 and of a Canadian law since June 1992. Raymond Legault takes the presidency of it since March 2007.

Description

It has the role “the identification, the study, the defense and the development of the economic interests, social and moral of the artists”. The UDA represents the artists working in French in Quebec and elsewhere in Canada. It also makes it for the Québécois artists who work in another language that French, with a limitation: it cannot represent the artists in a production in English mainly intended for a public of English language.

After years of negotiations, the UDA managed to sign collective agreements of work with the most important organizations of the scene and audio-visual Canadian. In 2005, it manages about thirty collective agreements covering various sectors: commercial advertisements, Cinema, disc, Doubling, Scene and Television. They ensure of the minimal conditions of work and remuneration for the artists who are members of the UDA. In 2005, the union counts approximately 6  400 members and 3  900 training members and is affiliated with the International federation of the actors (TRUSTED). In 2007, it counts among its members 3585 men and 3336 women for a total of 6921 members, including 4062 actors, 438 singers, 532 organizers and 218 dancers. Its board of directors of 21 members directs 70 frameworks and employees, for a total budget of 7 million Canadian dollars annually, 160 million dollars in pension funds and a bottom of strike of 4,6 million. It negotiated 40 collective agreements and 800 letters of agreements with various producers who call upon the services of his members.

History

It is into 1937 that this trade union is established on the initiative of the Chanteur Rene Bertrand. In 1942, the trade union is made recognize like professional association under the name of Union of the opera singers and dramatic. It is into 1952 that the name of Union of the artists (UDA) is adopted. The year according to, the UDA is affiliated with TRUSTED.

In 1967, the UDA obtains a programme of welfare benefits for its members: Insurance - life, insurance-accident and insurance-incomes. In 1987, the Union of the artists obtains a law recognizing a legal statute with the artists: the Law on the Statute of the artist. Five years later, the Government of Canada in fact as much. In 1997, the UDA obtains the inscription in the Law on the royalty of the close rights; a right which is connected with that of royalty for the interpreters and who generates the payment of royalties by the broadcasters, inter alia.

In 2007, its president Pierre Curzi leaves his station to stand as a candidate to the Québécois general election of 2007 under the banner of the Parti Québécois. Two teams carried out by Raymond Legault and Sebastien Dhavernas stand as a candidates for his direction.
