The UEF thus claims European Fédéralisme.
Founded association in December 1946 under the name of European Union of the federalists. It gathers several initiatives resulting in particular from resistance, having for objective to create an European Federation, in particular: It Federalistic Movement European created the shortly after the fall of Mussolini to Milan, from August 27th to 29th 1943, in particular under the impulse of the opponent Altiero Spinelli. It French Committee for the European Federation created with Lyon by members of the " group; Francs-tireurs" in June 1944.
Participants resulting from 14 country find themselves with Hertenstein in Switzerland from September 15th to 22nd 1946 and adopt a Joint Declaration. Joined by other organizations, they found the UEF with Basle (Swiss) in December.
The constitutive Congress with place with Montreux (Swiss) from August 27th to 31st 1947. Adopted motions define the principles of the Fédéralisme to which adheres the organization and its objectives of European unification.
Among the first organizer of association, one finds Alexandre Marc, Denis de Rougemont, Altiero Spinelli, Henri Frenay.
The UEF takes part with United Europe Movement of Winston Churchill, with the organization of the Congrès of $the Hague, where its theses will be influential but minority. The UEF still to date takes part in the European Mouvement resulting from this Congress.
Association is implied in the countryside in favor of the European Community of defense which fails in 1954.
A scission separates those which give their support for the involved process by the European governments with the European Economic community and those which wish to build Europe by mobilizing the citizens for a European constituent Assembly. The two branches will meet again in 1973 to lead countryside for the election of the the European Parliament to the vote for all which become reality in 1979, for a European single currency and finally for a European Constitution.
An autonomous young branch is also creates at the same time: Young Federalistic Europeans (JEF).
The establishment of association is very variable today according to the countries. In 2005, the movement is chaired by Mercedes Bresso, president of the area Piedmont, which succeeded OJ Leinen, European deputy PSE then president of the Commission of the constitutional deals in the European Parliament.
