The Union of the Arab Maghreb or UMA () indicates the political union formed by the five countries of large the the Maghreb, namely the Algérie, the Tunisia, the Morocco, the Libya as well as the Mauritania. The head office of the UMA is located at Rabat.

Presentation

The union is founded on the initiative of Morocco the February 17th 1989 at a meeting of the 5 Maghrebian Heads of State to Marrakech. it should be noted that the decision to form this union was made at the time of the famous top of Zeralda held in Algeria in 1988.

The institutions of the UMA are composed of the Council of the Heads of State (which did not meet since 1994 in spite of various attempts), of the Council of Ministers of the foreign affairs, a follow-up committee, a Court of justice made up of 10 members (2 per country) qualified for the disagreements between parts amenable to the Member States, of an advisory Room made up of 30 delegated by country as well as 4 specialized departmental committees. Its secretariat is not fixed and follows for the moment the presidency which passes annually from Heads of State to the other. Because of certain conflicts, the Union of the Arab Maghreb pains has to meet and has to be linked, in particular concerning the question of the Sahara Occidental.

It has a Drapeau gathering the colors and the symbols present on the flags of the 5 Member States:
  • the red (Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria), the green (Mauritania, Libya, Algeria, Morocco), the white (Tunisia, Algeria) and the yellow (Mauritania) for the colors
  • the crescent (Mauritania, Tunisia, Algeria) and the star (Mauritania, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco) for the symbols

It is structured horizontally (red in top and green in bottom), is divided by a small white band and is struck of a large yellow crescent (points upwards) and of 5 stars placed in arc of circle above the crescent representing the 5 Member States.
