Union of Krewo

The Union of Krewo (or Union of Krevo ) was a political agreement and dynastic between the queen of Poland, Hedwige of Anjou and the Large-Duke of Lithuania, Jogaila Algirdaitis. It was the beginning of the Union of Poland-Lithuania. The document was signed in the town of Krewo, the August 14th 1385. The terms was:

  • the marriage of the queen of Poland and the Large duke Jogaila Algirdaitis

  • the crowning of Jogaila Algirdaitis like king de Pologne under the name of Ladislas II Jagellon (Władysław Jagiełło)
  • the convertion of the Large duke Ladislas and of the noble Lithuanians to the Catholic religion
  • release of all the Christian prisoners held by the Lithuanians
  • union of the grounds of Lithuania and Poland under the sovereignty of the laws of Poland " for all the éternité"

Initially, the Polish nobility was not satisfied with arrangement dynastic, and was shared between the opposition to the teutonic knights and the increasing threat of the Russian S. But the chiefs of the two states jugérent that the union would make a greater force vis-a-vis the external threats.

While Ladislas II and Hedwige of Anjou reigned on Poland and Lithuania, reality capacity in great principality of Lithuania was decreed with the cousin of Lasislas, Vytautas Large the, which pursued a generally independent policy. With died of the queen Hedwige in 1399, Ladislas remained the sovereign of Poland and becomes thus the founder of the dynasty Jagellonne. The union of the forces of Poland and Lithuania came to end from the teutonic knights in their inflicting a decisive defeat to the Bataille from Grunwald in 1410.
