The Union Christian Democrat of Germany ( Christlich Demokratische Union Deutschlands , CDU ), is a German Political party founded in 1945. Referring to the current European Christian-Democrat, it is the principal training of the right German. It is present on all the terroitoire of the Federal republic, except for the Bavaria, where the tendency Christian-Democrat is represented by the Christian woman-social Union (CSU); the co-operation of the two parties in the federal plan is called CDU/CSU.

Since the legislative elections of 2005, Angela Merkel, president of CDU, directs the Federal government formed in coalition with the social democrat Parti (SPD).

History

Founded in 1945 with Berlin and in the Rhineland, following the fall of the Third Reich, it was organized between 1945 and 1949 in the Länder of the zones of Western occupation. It was linked at the federal level in 1950. An important part of its members (Konrad Adenauer, inter alia) is originating in the old party Zentrum (“Left the center”), of catholic, existing inspiration before the Second world war. However, unlike this one, it joins together catholic and Protestant.

Since 1949, it becomes the first party of the Federal Republic of Germany by recommending a third way between Socialisme and Capitalisme, inspired by Christian humanism. Its president Konrad Adenauer becomes the first Chancelier of the post-war period. He contributes to the reintegration of Germany on the international scene and in particular European, while taking part in the creation of the European Coal and Steel Community then of the European Economic community. He also chairs the " miracle économique" years 1950 and 1960. Allied with the Left liberal-democrat (FDP), representing laic middle-class, it is constrained to constitute a " Large coalition" with its principal rival, the social democrat Left Germany (SPD) of 1966 to 1969. It crosses then a long period of opposition.

Under the direction of Helmut Kohl, it returns to the capacity in 1982 by reconstituting its alliance with the FDP. It modifies its policy in a more liberal direction, promoting a “adaptation of the Rhenish model” to the news gives economic world. The Kohl chancellor profits from will have that the reunification brings to him, i.e. the integration of the German Democratic republic in the federal bosom, following the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. Nevertheless, the government must face the economic costs of the reunification and with the rise of unemployment.

Overcome in 1998, it turns over in the opposition. It agrees to support the president of the CSU Edmund Stoiber for the race with the chancellery in 2002, but he fails of accuracy. Consequently, its president Angela Merkel leads the countryside of 2005. But the turning which she recommends are considered to be too liberal per many leaders of the party. The victory which was announced triumphal was limited finally. CDU and its allied CSU arrived at the head only of accuracy, and were forced to conclude one second " Large coalition" with the SPD to control and carry Angela Merkel to the chancellery.
