Unified Combatant Command
A Command Interarmées de Combat ( Unified Combatant Command ; COCOM ) is composed of manpower coming from at least two branches distinct from the Armed forces from the United States. Its mission is permanent and geographically wide.
It organizes either around an geographical area called zone of responsibility (or AOR, Area Of Responsibility ), or around a functional axis.
There exist currently (February 2007) ten commands interarmées of combat . Five have geographical responsibilities and five have functional responsibilities.
One eleventh command must be operational the September 30th 2008
Chain of command
The chain of command follows the following order:- Secretary with Defense
- Chiefs of Unified Combatant Commands
Foot-note: The president of the Joint Chiefs off Staff can communicate with the chiefs of Unified Combattant Commands but does not exert any military authority on any forces of combat.
