Unieux
Unieux is a common French, located in the department of the the Loire and the area the Rhone-Alps. Its Habitants is called Unieutaires.
Geography
With the doors of the throats of the the Loire (river), at the edge of the water level of the Dam Grangent, the commune profits from the presence of a Voluntary Natural reserve of 330 hectares.Unieux is located in the valley of the Ondaine, with: 4km of Firminy; 14km of Saint-Etienne; 75km of Lyon.
History
The creation of the commune goes up in 1794.Until 1830 it is the town of Firminy which dealt with the administration for Unieux. The first meeting of the municipal council took place on November 18th 1831 and Jean Pepier was elected mayor. But the first mayor of Unieux, called " agent municipal" , was Barthélémy Gachet, elected in 1794.
The religious ceremonies took place in Firminy until in 1830, date on which the church of the Borough was completed. Indeed the parishioners of Unieux, refusing to take part at the expenses of restoration of the church of Firminy, undertook construction. In 1830, the cemetery of Unieux was created, then in the years which followed it was regularly increased.
The town hall-school was built in 1852.
Thanks to the industry of iron: trip hammers, forging mills and nail factories were installed on the levels of Ondaine as of the beginning 17th century.
In 1829: creation of the Forging mills of Unieux by Jacob Holtzer (shear steels) at the edge of Ondaine.
The post office was built on June 4th, 1886 near close to the Holtzer factory.
Unieux had a station built in 1883 (from which also Fraisses profited, common neighbor) but nowadays the principal building was demolished and some trains still serve this stagnation point.
ORIGINS OF THE NAME OF THE COMMUNE Connected to the Latin contraction (or Roman) of rivus-uniatus (plain river born from the meeting of two other rivers). With the XII° century the supposed name of the city was Muniaco, Hugmyeu, Unieu and Unieux.
