Unguja

Unguja is the name of the principal island of the archipelago of Zanzibar. It is also called Zanzibar, just as his the most populated city, which is not without creating confusion.

Urban centres
- Zanzibar city is the historical center, the most populated agglomerations and the shopping mall of the island of Unguja. It is the administrative capital of the province. Its old city Mji Mkongwe (English: Stone Town ), a Médina, is located on the west coast at the center of the island. It also extends on the site from Ng' ambo and the old split from Darajani.
- Makunduchi, populated approximately 6000 people, it develops thanks to tourism. It also shelters the popular festival of Mwaka Koga.
- Mkokotoni, populated approximately 2500 to 3000 inhabitants, was a very important port because it accommodated the steamers come from north, but is declining today, the centers of Mkwajuni and Gamba having eclipsed it.
- Dunga was the capital of the sultans Chirazi Mwinyi Mkuu, known to be a time very disturbed and thus developed only recently. Its population is approximately 3000 people. The city is located at a strategic center between the various important cities of the island.
- Mahonda is located at the north of the island and account approximately 6000 inhabitants. It has a sugar factory built by the Chinese in the Années 1970.
Small islands
The island of Unguja is surrounded of more than 20 small islands, whose majority uninhabited, are located at the west of the island, in the channel of Zanzibar:- Bawe, located at a few kilometers in the west of Zanzibar city, one of the most visited islands
- Changuu, is called the island prison (Island Prison), which shelters a British marine cemetery. Today several tortoises originating in Seychelles lives there.
- Chapwani is the small island nearest to Stone Town
- Chumbe is an island from approximately 20 Ca located at the south-west of Stown Town. A marine natural reserve was creates because of the richness of the corals. This zone is managed by private capital.
- Kibandiko is a small island located at north east of Stown town.
- Kizingo is a small island located between Chumbe and Unguja.
- Kwale, Nianembe (close to Uzi) and Miwi (between Short-nap cloth Fumba and Uzi, in the east of Nianembe), is small islands located in the Menai bay, in the western south of Unguja. The bay and its islands are stated surfaces to be preserved.
- the island of Latham or Fungu Kizimkazi, is an island located at approximately 56 km in the south of Unguja and at 64 km in the south-east of Dar Es Salaam. This island is known for these fields of seagrass, reefs and spectacular colonies of birds.
- Makutani is a small small island between the islands of Tumbatu and Mkokotoni.
- island of Mnemba is an small island in the western north of Unguja, it is known for its sand beaches white and these reefs which are an excellent site of Plongée underwater.
- Mwana wa Mwana is a small small island in the north of the island of Tumbatu.
- Popo is a small small island between Tumbatu and the port of Mkokotoni on Unguja.
- Ukanga is a small small island close to Kisakasaka. It is used for the breeding.
- Uzi is one of the inhabited islands around Unguja.
- Pungume, in the south of Unguja, is the first of the islands which sees the travellers coming from Dar are Salam.
- Tumbatu is an island located at the North-West of Unguja and is known to be the ground of orgine of the ethnos group Watumbatu. Tumbatu and Uzi are the only inhabited islands permanently around Unguja.

The island is relatively punt and is surrounded in its major part by a coral barrier and sand beaches very fine white.

The archipelago is composed of three islands and does not form an administrative unit. The island of Unguja is separate into three areas (Northern Unguja, Southern Unguja and exchange, Unguja city and West)The town of Zanzibar city, whose Mji Mkongwe ( Stone town ), its old city which is registered with the inheritance world of UNESCO, is the capital of the island.
