Unelles

The Unelles (Latinized in Unelli ) were one of the Gallic Peuples alive, during its invasion by Jules César between 58 and 51 av. J.C, in the Armorican part of the hairy Gaulle occupying the Cotentin, the north of the current department of the Manche.

The capital of the city of Unelles was Constantia, today the town of Coutances.

Unelles had as neighbors the Bajocasses and the Viducasses in the east and south-east, and the Abrincates in the south.

At the summer 57 av. J. - C., Unelles made, as well as the other Gallic people, tender with the Roman Légion of Publius Crassus. A few months later, they adopt the revolt orchestrated by the Vénètes and, joined by the Aulerques Éburovices and the Lexoviens, face between Vire and Avranches the three legions of the Légat Quintus Titurius Sabinus. Ordered by Viridovix, the chief of Unelles, the united Gallic army is demolished at the time of its attack of the Roman camp. Unelles will make, like the majority of the de Gaulle people, left the coalition which will contribute five years later to the army sent to the help of Vercingétorix to Alésia. Their contribution does not seem to have exceeded then: 3000 warriors.
