Under My Thumb

Under My Thumb is a Chanson written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richard and interpreted by the Rolling Stones. It appeared for the first time on the album Aftermath of 1966, and was never published in simple. It was one of the most popular songs of Stones of the time and it is probably most known of the songs of Aftermath , appearing on many compilation S of the group.

History

Recorded at the sessions of recording of Aftermath of March 1966 to the studios of RCA Records (Hollywood), this song exists in two versions, one long 3 minutes and 41 seconds, and the other short one during twenty-and-a seconds of less. These two versions are in fact exits of the same catch, but one was seen withdrawing some musical parts. One can observe this same phenomenon of multiplicity of the versions on the title {{Guil|Paint It, Black}}, dating from the same time.

Brian Jones makes in Under My Thumb to intervene for the first time a Marimba. Indeed during the recordings of Aftermath to the studios RCA, Jones found a multitude of instruments to strange sonorities. This one had such musical practices and knowledge which it was quasi instantaneously able to play about it of the majority. (Of return in England, Brian Jones will make a massive use of the Mellotron, which also combines many exotic sounds).
These words celebrate the final of the control and the control of a woman previously go-getter and dominant satisfaction. The words which enjoy it successful domestication of the shrew with joy (comparing the woman in question with one pet or with one cat ), broad negative reactions caused among some listeners, particularly of the feminist . But one can reasonably say that the song is only one image and that the words of Jagger are theatrical and do not recommend the domination masculine.
One can also note that the woman who is the subject of the song was previously the dominant figure in the report/ratio, and which the narrator was in the beginning completely subjected to it, which makes implications of the song more than a simple misogyny. Jagger was expressed besides much later on this subject in an interview of 1995: It is not a song more anti-feminist who the others… Oui, it is a caricature, and it is in answer to a girl who was a very aggressive woman. .

Music

Like several songs of the period of Aftermath , Under My Thumb employ an innovative instrumentation more that what Stones had carried out before, like a low line of boldly using for the time a pedal Fuzz probably played by Bill Wyman. It is partly thanks to this basic piece out of the commun run that Wyman was really recognized. A legend would like that Keith Richards is at the origin of this pedal and even as it is him which exploits this pieces about it. However truths beginnings of Richards with low were more certainly done on the piece Let' S Spend the Night together , recorded one year later (and not of {{Guil|Sympathy for the Devil}}, like wants it an old rumor) at the time of the festival of Altamont (1969) which was killed Meridith Hunter, black American, by doped and drunk Hells Angels, however responsible for the safety of this festival.

At the beginning of the Years 1980, more precisely at the time of the rounds in the United States and in Europe of 1981 and 1982, the time being at the same time a return to the source and a return to success for Stones, those reinterpreted in concert Under My Thumb in a worked over again version, new wave , almost unrecognizable, by calling upon many guitars which draw towards a music metal. This version, which one can find on Still Life - American Concert 1981 (1982) is not appreciated much by the fans purists , to leave them in 45 turns. The goal was then to make pressure for the release of Jagger and Richards, although ironically the two musicians were released before the official exit of simple. Since the pieces were integrated into compilations of the group such as Two' S Missing and Rarities vol. 1 .

The group of Canadian Rock Streetheart also recorded a recovery of Under My Thumb in 1979. This recovery was besides their larger result with the Canadian Charts.

At the beginning of the Years 1980, the group of Punk Social Distortion made a resumption of the song before the realization of its first album. This version is from now on available on their collection of scarcities, Mainliner: Wreckage from the Past . In the middle of the Années 1990 the group re-recorded it as a Piece hidden on White Light, White Heat, White Trash and it also appears on their Live At the Roxy , because it from now on became one the their traditional ones on scene.

Finally the rock group Chile in Los Miserables recorded a recovery of Under My Thumb , based on the version of Social Distortion. The characteristic of this version is that its words are in Spanish language. The name of the song is Bajo este ground ( under this sun ), and the words have nothing to do with the original words of Rolling Stones, but were completely réimaginées, the group preserving only the melody line of Under My Thumb of Jagger and Richards. Bajo este Ground is included in the album Date Cuenta (2000).

Among the few other groups having begun again Under My Thumb , one can still quote the Stinky Toys (with the mileu of the Années 1970) the Kingsmen (at the beginning of the Années 1980) or the Flamin' Groovies (in the Années 1990).
