Under

The area of the Under or the Under (and the assif one of the same name), with the area of the Assif N Mast (formerly called Assif Oulghas) and assif N Dra, belonged to the thirteenth Moroccan area of Under-Massed-Dra.

Situation

The Under is an area of the south-west of the Morocco, whose capital is Agadir. The other important cities are: Inezgane, Tiznit, Tafraout, Taroudant, Massed, Has Melloul, Biougra, Has Baha, Sidi Ifni, Bouizakarne, Tata…

Geology

The Under (Tamazirt N Under in tachelhit) is, geologically speaking, the alluvial basin of the Wadi Under (Assif N Under), separated from the the Sahara by the mountains of the Anti-Atlas. The current vegetation under is the savanna dominated by the Arganier (argania spinosa), a local endemic tree (although it was transplanted in other areas of the world like the south of the Spain); part of the area planted of argans is now a reserve of the biosphere of UNESCO which tries to protect this single habitat.

History

A basin irrigated very well made Under one of the most fertile areas of Morocco during centuries, known since at least the eleventh century for the culture and the export of sugar. The golden age of Under is at the neighborhoods of the 17th century during the era of the kingdom of Tazeroualt, when the whole area profited from autonomy and benefitted from the commercial exploitation from transport from Saharan gold and the sale from sugar to the Portuguese tradesmen, Dutch and English. The center of foreign trade at that time was in Agadir, city located at 10 kilometers in the north of the mouth of the wadi Under.

Demography

The population of Under with the last census rose to 3 million. Under is inhabited mainly by Amazigh S; except some tribes historically Arabic-speaking people, the majority of the inhabitants of Under are mainly of Ichelhin (Chleuh). The inhabitants are known as Has Under (Ousouss in the singular) - STI Under (Oultsouss) in tachelhit. But it is the Arab term of Soussi which is essential little by little.
