Uncle Vania

Uncle Vania is a Play in 4 acts of Anton Tchekhov of 1897 which mixes the drama and the comic one.

History

She tells the stay of summer of conceited and egocentric person professor Sérébriakov and his young Eléna wife, in her brother-in-law " oncle" Vania.

Characters

Ivan Voinitski (uncle Vania) is lazy and jealous the professor. The part is held in the field of Sonia, girl of the professor, niece of Vania. This last worked all its life the field to send money to Sérébriakov, which he admired. Approximately a year before the beginning of the part, it lost all these illusions on this one, which makes it particularly bitter, it with the impression to have wasted its life.
Elena is the second woman of the professor. She is very beautiful, and is bored deeply with the field. She is not in love any more with her husband and feels allured by Doctor Astrov.
Professor Serebriakov strange, is reprocessed and written “to open open doors”. It has success near the women. It is an egoistic intellectual who saw this life with the field like an exile. It does not support to be seen aging. He saw in a way completely shifted with the field: he writes the night, sleeps the day…
Sonia is the girl of the professor and his first wife. She works the field with Voïnistki, which she calls " Uncle Vania". She is in love with Doctor Astrov for a long time but he does not like it.
Astrov is doctor, he often passes to the field. He does not like any more to deal with his patients, nor does not love anybody any more. He is only attracted by beautiful Eléna.
Marina is the nurse of Sonia
Téléguine is a ruined owner who lives with the field
Maria is the mother of Vania, and the mother-in-law of Sérébriakov, which she admires.

The history will show between Serebriakov and Voïnitsiki an argument, with an attempted murder of Voïnitski on Serebriakov.

Values

Tchekhov gets busy to break the illusions which are the love and the money as causes happiness.

Sérébriakov is the caricature of the cold and egoistic intellectuals. It is unable of tenderness towards his own daughter, Sonia.

Astrov is unable to like the others. Alcohol is used to him as refuge to express its sensitivity and its dreams. Eléna is conscious of its uselessness, it is a woman who did not find her raison d'être.

The characters and their relations are complex and subtle. Possible happinesses of the ones and others intersect without never being.

The part is a succession of moments of life. The characters are touching by their defects, their qualities and their sufferings.

Around work

This part is inspired by the part the Genius of the forests , also of Anton Tchekhov.
the last counterpart of work inspired Rachmaninov to write We will rest (Op.26 N°3: My otdokhniom in Russian, We shall rest in English).
In 1994 Louis Malle adopted it with the cinema under the title: Vanya, 42e street ( Vanya, 42nd Street )
