Unchained Melody is one of the most recorded songs 20th century; more than 500 versions. In only one week in the Years 1950, not less than 4 versions were in the classifications with the the United States and the the United Kingdom.

Written originally by the type-setter of film music Alex North like topic for the film Unchained (1955), the words of Hy Zaret tell the history of a prisoner who suffers from the absence of his boyfriend. Baxter recorded the version of the original soundtrack of film. Very quickly after a version was recorded by Al Hibbler which reaches the 3rd place. Roy Hamilton recorded a version which will arrive at the 6th place. First true success came with Harry Belafonte, which also sang it for the Oscars of the cinema 1956.

One of the most known versions is that credited by The Righteous Brothers, interpreted in solo by Bobby Hatfield in 1965 (Bobby Hatfield then recorded versions where it is credited).

This song is with the the United Kingdom to have only been 4 times number 1 with different interpreters: Jimmy Young (1955); Righteous Brothers (1990); Robson & Jerome (1995); and Gareth Spoil (2002).
