Unalaska

Unalaska is a small town of Alaska on the island of Unalaska in the archipelago of the Aleutian Islands. With the census of 2000, the population was there of 4  283 inhabitants. The zone of the port is on the island close to Amaknak. It is connected to the city by a bridge.

The people of the Aléoutes lived in the area well before the arrival of Europeans.

The area of Unalaska was reached for the first time by Europeans by Russian hunter of fur carried out by Stepan Glotov in 1759.

The town of Unalaska draws its name from the island where it is. The word “Unalaska” is a Americanization Russian term Ounalashka .

Geography

Unalaska is located by 53°53' 20" North and 166°31' 38" West. It has an total surface area of 549,9km ² including water 47,7%.

Demography

In 2000, the city counted 4  283 inhabitants is 834 hearths and 476 families. The population density was of 14,9 hab/km ². The population is there mainly of European origin or aléoute.

History

The islands of Unalaska and Amaknak comprised 24 campings gathering approximately a thousand of people on arrival of the Russians in 1759. In 1768, Unalaska became a Russian port mainly intended for the export of Fourrure S. In 1825, a Russian church orthodoxe was built there. The priest Ivan Veniaminov created the first system of transcription of the local language aléoute with the assistance of the autochtones and transcribed in aléoute the Écritures.

The June 3rd 1942, Unalaska was bombarded by the army Japan ease. The major part of Aléoutes were moved towards south-east of the Alaska.

Economy

In spite of its geographical of the remainder of the the United States, and of the same insulation of the Alaska, Unalaska has a very dynamic port in the field of fishing. Indeed, this one is the first of the United States in this field in term of volume since 1981.

A pilot project initiated by the port of Unalaska and the University of Alaska produces Biodiesel with-to leave fish. In the long term, the production should amount to 3,5 million annual tons.
