Umma (Sumer)
Umma (current Such Jokha , in Iraq) is an old city of the country of Sumer, capital of the State of the same name. The site was however never excavated in an official way. The enormous quantity of texts which comes from this place, relating to especially the period of the Third Dynasty of Ur, is resulting from clandestine excavations, which are still currently prolonged.
It reaches its apogee at Antiquated the Dynastique period. It is especially known for its frontier confrontations with the city close to Lagash. Its most famous sovereign is Lugal-zagezi, which founds the first and only empire sumérien.
The vestiges of the city, like those of Ur, were plundered following the war of Kuwait (1990-1991).
