Umbilical cord
At the Mammalian S Placental S, the umbilical cord is the body which joint the Placenta of the pregnant mother to the Fœtus or the Embryon. It is in this cord that the blood-vessels circulate (2 arteries and 1 vein) which feed the embryo then the fetus during the Grossesse. Nutrient S and Oxygène essential with the survival of the baby is thus transmitted.
At the Man, the umbilical cord reaches approximately in the long term 50cm length and 2cm of Diamètre.
When to cut the cord?
At the time of the Childbirth, once the Baby left the belly of the mother, two attitudes are possible: the umbilical cord can be cramp immediately to stop the Blood circulation between the placenta and the baby, then cut. It is also possible to as wait a few minutes as blood circulation in the cord stops itself. At this time, one can cut the cord, without having with the clamper or to tie it. The time of section of the cord varies in particular according to the countries, France supporting for example a short time, contrary to Denmark. It does not seem to have of superiority of one or the other method for the mother. for the baby, a later section would make it possible to have a slightly higher rate of Hémoglobine because of the passage of blood between the placenta and the newborn, which would be all the more interesting if the childbirth is premature.
Original cells
The umbilical cord is a source of original cells. More and more in the United States, the hospitals propose to preserve the cord from a point of view of possible auto- Transplantation, in the event of Leucémie of the child for example.
