Umberto Bossi (September 19th 1941 with Cassano Magnago, province of Varèse) is a Politician Italian Régionaliste , leader and founder of the Ligue of North.

Since July 2004, it is European Député registered with the group Indépendance/Démocratie (before, until the July 18th, it was Minister for the Reforms of the Gouvernement Silvio Berlusconi II. He had been member of the European Parliament previously (1994-2001)

After a scientific vat, it is registered at the medical college but gives up with the beginning of the year eighty, without finishing its doctorate. Its political commitment is born in the Seventies, stimulated by a meeting with Bruno Salvadori which directed then the Union valdôtaine. With the beginning of the year eighty, it founds with Roberto Maroni and Giuseppe Leoni, the Lega Lombarda (the League lombarde) of which he becomes the secretary. At the end of the Eighties, it succeeds in federating the various movements separatists of Italy of North with the foundation of the Ligue of the North of which he becomes federal secretary. The party, which initially continued secessionist with a great repercussion in the middle of the Nineties, gradually forgot its independence claims - to the great displeasure of part of its electorate very attached to the free Padanie, to become a simple party of extreme-right-hand side historically not fascist, whose representatives often let themselves go to racist remarks (including with regard to the Italian méridion) and homophobes. In June 2003 for example, Bossi, then minister, called with the murder while recommending to at sea cannonade the boats of the immigrants and the traficants.

Elected official senator at the time of Xe legislature (its first mandate, from where its nickname of senatur in dialect lombard), it was appointed with four recoveries (XIe, XIIe, XIIIe, and XIVe legislatures) and also four times European Député.

He is condemned, at the same time as the former treasurer of the League, for corruption within the framework of the business Montedison .

March 11th 2004, date on which it was victim of a serious pathology to the January 11th 2005 (more than 300 days), without resigning of any mandate, it was lengthily hospitalized and did not have a political activity.
