Umatilla is the seat of the Comté of Umatilla, State of the Oregon, with the the United States, the limit with the State of Washington, on bank of the river Columbia. At the time of the Census of 2000, its population counted: 4978 inhabitants. Densité : 546  hab/km ² (1  415,3  hab/mi ²). Surface totale : 9,7  km ² (3,7  semi ²). Coordinates géographiques :.

The city and the county owe their name with a river éponyme which is thrown in the Columbia river not far from there.

History

The site of Umatilla was visited by Lewis and Clark in 1806. The current city was founded in 1863 by Timothy K. Davenport, it will be built-in the following year. There existed however a post office since 1851. The local economy benefitted from the Gold rush of the Années 1860 and 1870. Umatilla lost of its importance in the Années 1880 vis-a-vis the Company of navigation and railroad of Oregon.

During the Second world war, Umatilla sheltered a vast deposit of the army, which stored as well the covers as ammunition. In 1962, one added to him the function of storage of chemical weapons. Reorganized 1990 with 1994, the deposit is not useful any more but for the chemical weapons.

In 1955 a bridge was built on the Columbia river to connect Umatilla to Plymouth, Washington, its sister city. Up to that point this way was carried out in ferry.
