Ultrabithorax

Ultra-bithorax (Ubx) formed part with the infra-abdominal field (iab) of the gene complex Bithorax (BX-C).

This field covers an area of approximately 100.000 pairs of bases and control the morphogenesis of the thoracic and abdominal segments of Drosophila .

Each segment would be different from the type of the preceding segment only after expression of this Ubx gene.

An absence of expression prevents the differentiation of the segment of the type of the preceding segment.

Thus the third thoracic segment (T3) carrying the wing differentiated in haltère from the Diptères is under the genetic control of the Ubx gene. The change of this gene leads so that segment T3 remains homologous with the T2 segment. It results an adult with 4 from it wings instead of 2.
