Ulis
Ulis is a common French, located in the department of the the Essonne and the area Île-de-France.
Its inhabitants is called the Ulissiens .
Geography
The city of Ulis is located on a plate, above the valley of the Yvette, in edge of the highway A10, to 20 km in the south of Paris, hardly to 25 km of the international airport of Orly and to 10 km of the station of interconnection TGV of Massy. The N118 connects N10 (on the level of Sevres) to a10 highway (on the level of Ulis).The plan of the city was conceived by the architect Robert Camelot, according to precepts of Le Corbusier. The cars circulate on the level of the ground, while the pedestrians can borrow footbridges from a higher level and never not cross a road to circulate in the city.
The collective habitat (great units) occupies a prevalent place in the commune, but there exists also a certain number of individual dwellings.
Public transport
In Ulis, one does not find a bus the RATP, but of the privat lines of the network Optile.Those serve in particular the closest stations: Bore-hole-on-Yvette (the RER B) and Orsay (the RER B), like Massy-Palaiseau (the RER B, the RER C, TGV).
Economy
The Parc of activities of Courtabœuf is the greatest industrial park of Europe, it extends on 378 ha and represents: 24500 employees. It gathers more: 1000 companies on more than 3,5 million m ². Each day it receives more: 12000 visitors. It is with horse on the communes of Ulis, Villebon-sur-Yvette and Villejust which gathered within an intercommunity association with single vocation, named Courtaboeuf Développement, created on January 1st, 2007 in order to support the concerted development of the park of activity.
The city accommodates the Shopping mall Ulis 2 which gathers a great number of stores, shops and services organized around a Hypermarché.
Demography
After a strong growth which brought it to more than 30.000 inhabitants, the population of Ulis decrease regularly to be established with 25.947 inhabitants with the census of 1999 (25.785 without double accounts).
History
The name Ulis can have two origins:
- ground to be cleared, the old verb usler meaning to burn , therefore to clear by burn-beating;
- name of a landowner of the Roman epoch, Uslo.
A long time, Ulis were only one plate agricultural. The stronghold of Ulis belonged to the lords of Bures at the time feudal.
The November 30th 1960, a ministerial decree envisages the creation of a Urban development zone (ZUP) of 10.000 residences to horse on the communes of Bore-hole-on-Yvette and Orsay. The authorities thus hope to face the increase in the demand of residences generated by the development of the Vallée de Chevreuse.
The February 17th 1977, the prefect of the the Essonne, Mr. Cousserand, signs the bearing decree on the creation of the commune of Ulis, starting from grounds yielded by the communes of Bore-hole-on-Yvette and Orsay, and following a referendum near the population of these two communes.
Administration
The first municipal council is elected in March 1977. The mayor is Paul Loridant, still at this station today. The Canton of Ulis was created in 1985.
Political of the city
The cities of Daunière, of the Thickets, Upstreams, Filberts, Bergères, High Flat are classified Disadvantaged urban area (ZUS), and the schools which are located there profit from the classification in ZEP. A renovation project Urban, signed with ANRU is under development on the western Center town and districts.
Principal equipment
In terms of school facilities and cultural, one finds in particular in Ulis the Médiathèque François Mitterrand, the Arts center Boris Vian like:
- 8 elementary school complexes (Filberts, Thicket, Shepherdesses, Park, Courdimanche, Millepertuis, Dimancherie and Queue of bird);
- colleges of the Upstreams and Mondétour;
- the college of Essouriau.
A city controls as regards safety
The city of Ulis was precursory for the Local police, with in particular of the agents in VTT, space pedestrians being dominating in the city and inaccessible for the traditional vehicles. To note that, during a few years, an assembled police force was used on the carpark of the shopping mall.

- the footballer Patrice Evra (Nice, Monaco, Manchester United), born in Dakar (Senegal) on May 15th, 1981, grew in Ulis (where he lived of 1984 to 1998).
- the rappor Sinik, born on June 26th, 1980 in Paris and which with then lived in Ulis.
- raspy the Diam' S, born on July 25th, 1980 with Cyprus arrived to France during its adolescence. It grew with Orsay in the district of Mondétour, bordering on Ulis, and it met there the rappor Sinik at the exit of its college.
- the sprinters Daniel Sangouma and Jean-Charles Trouabal (vice-champions of the world of relays 4 × 100 m in 1991 and ex-recordmen of the world of relays 4 × 100 m in 1990 with Split).
- the swimmer Laurent Neuville (Olympic finalist with the Olympic Games of summer of 1988 - 4 × 100 m freestyle).
- the mayor and former Senator (MRC), Paul Loridant.
- the Escrime ur (foil ist) Terence Joubert was born in Ulis the April 17th 1982.
