Ugljan

Ugljan is a Croatian Island of the archipelago of Zadar, in Adriatic Sea. Its agglomerations (Preko, Ugljan, Lukoran, Sutomišćica, Poljana, Kali, Ošljak and Kukljica) are on the east coast of the island. The Island, from which the population density one of highest among the Croatian islands, is produced figs, olives, wine and fish. A boat of the Jadrolinija makes the shuttle between the port of Preko and the town of Zadar. The island is in addition connected to the island of Pašman by a bridge. Its surface is of 50,21 km (22km by 3,8km), its littoral makes approximately 70 km and its population was of 7.583 inhabitants in 2001. Its sunning is 2600 hours and its pluviometry of 800 mm per annum.

History

Pline old the named the Lissa island. With the Middle Ages it takes the name of Sveti Mihovil (Saint Michel). The island is for the first time mentioned under its current name in 1325. Very populated under the Roman empire (in particular in its north-western part). Excavations made it possible to establish that the production of Olive oil on Ugljan had lasted for more than 2000 years and it draws its name from it since ulja means " oil olive".
