The dialect of Udine

The dialect of Udine is particular at the city, where, unlike the surrounding zones, one employs an idiom of the Venetian type strongly influenced by the Frioulan. During last decades, however, this dialect fell in disuse and, today, it almost disappeared. Actually, this dialect was used only by two generations of inhabitants of Udine, those which were born during the Forties and Fifties from the last century. It is not related to the historical influence of Venice but it owes its origin with its social function “particular”: to distinguish the inhabitants from the center town of those of the periphery and the countryside inhabitants of the " seul" center town made use of it to assume - or, at least, they thought it - a social status higher than that of the inhabitants of the periphery and peasants of the countryside which spoke the Frioulan. This dialect was used only by two generations and then it was abandoned to be replaced by the Italian language. Today, only some people of these generations continue to speak it. The following generations preferred the Italian language or the Frioulan to him.
